I am using Ubuntu 16.04 with kernel 4.15.0-43. When I launch Chrome 79.0.3945.79 and start browsing, it crashes out after a few minutes with the error in the logs:

Stopping esets service (ESET NOD32 Antivirus‎) seems to resolve this problem.

Chrome 79.0.3945.79 (64bit)
Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
Kernel 4.15.0-72-generic

Thanks, but I'll need to keep ESET running as that is my AV software. Is this something Google or ESET will need to fix?

We have similar issue: few chrome users are affected. Turning off ESET is not an option.
Please provide another solution.

Having the same problem with 79.0.3945.79-0ubuntu0.16.04.1, installed from Ubuntu Software. After uninstalling, I installed the version from the snap store, which doesn't have this problem. Uninstalled snap version, then reinstalled 79.0.3945.79-0ubuntu0.16.04.1, problems return.

I also have Eset Nod32 running, but this is not a problem for the snap version of 79.0.3945.79

PS, I have the problem with both Chromium and Chrome, same versions. The snap store version is Chromium.

Update module    1074.1 (20190925)
Antivirus and antispyware scanner module    1557.5 (20191213)
Virus signature database    20533 (20191218)
Archive support module    1296 (20191212)
Advanced heuristics module    1196 (20191108)
Cleaner module    1205 (20191209)

If I disable ESET Real-time protection my browser will not segfault

@User 13548734056097282416 interesting ... I wonder if adding Chrome to the ESET exclusion list will work?

I've tried a couple of exclusions, the binary and also the ~/.config/google-chrome folder (which wouldn't be a permanent solution) but neither seemed to help.
I'm following this issue over on the Eset forums here -> https://forum.eset.com/topic/21896-chrome-79-always-starts-a-core-dump-and-crashes/

Same issue here!
NOTE: It's not an ESET NOD32 issue. I'm sure.
I've removed it yesterday.
Right now, running chromium, I got it:
"Dec 20 16:04:32 hp-z210 chromium-browser.desktop[3970]: [4051:1:1220/160432.849508:ERROR:child_process_sandbox_support_impl_linux.cc(79)] FontService unique font name matching request did not receive a response."
