Updates are disabled by your administrator
0
I have a user here that says his Chrome updates are disabled by the administrator which is me so that’s not the case lol. So far I’ve tried putting in place the reg key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Google\Update tapping the default option twice and change the data value from 0 to 1 which didn’t work.

Next tried “chrome://settings/reset” which still did not work.

Lastly, I removed Chrome and reinstalled it which installed the newest version (72) but it still showing automatic updates are disabled by administrator.

We do have the admx templates installed on our server so I check the Google GPO but I do not see the setting for “Google  Google Update  Preferences.” It isn’t there? Are there new templates I need to push out to my server to see the “Google Update” setting?

In our organization found some users downloading Google Chrome direct from web and IT sometimes installing the enterprise version google chrome. I do not know the difference in these two installs.
Here are step by step instructions: (Windows 7 PCs)
1. Save these instructions somewhere safe and close all instances of Chrome

2. Press the Windows key + R, type regedit.exe and press Enter
3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\
4. Double-click on DisableAutoUpdateChecksCheckboxValue
5. Change the data type 0 to 1
On my problem PC also found following 4 addtional entries:
Update{2BF2CA35-CCAF-4E58-BAB7-4163BFA03B88} VALUE 0
Update{4DC8B4CA-1BDA-483E-B5FA-D3C12E15B62D} VALUE 0
Update{74AF07D8-FB8F-4D51-8AC7-927721D56EBB} VALUE 0
Update{8A69D345-D564-463C-AFF1-A69D9E530F96} VALUE 0
These also had to be changed data type 0 to 1
I didn't even have to reboot. Just relauched Chrome and checked for update was fine no more message "Updates are disabled by your administrator"

In the end I deleted the 4 addtional entries and still working fine no more error message.
6. Exit the registry editor and launch Chrome

Have to agree with the reply from Mike Schrader. In my case, I only had 1 Update{GUID} entry.  Changing it from 0 to 1 allowed Chrome to update.  I went ahead & simply deleted that entry.  I suspect each Chrome release is assigned a new GUID, so you could end up with multiple such entries.  From what I can tell, it's safe to delete these. You can always first export the entries to an REG file for backup in case you wish to restore them.

Thanks for the info.  Flipped the UpdateDefault value from 0 to 1.  On next launch Chrome immediately started updating.
