Unable to drag final tab of a window 0 Recommended Answers 21 Replies 66 Upvotes

Recently my chrome updated (78.0.3904.87) and this has changed an ease of access feature I use often: dragging and dropping tabs.

How I used the feature typically is to move a tab over to my other monitor and keep it maximized. They changed the functionality so that dragging and dropping tabs however is limited to windows that contain more than 1 tab. So, now if I want to move over my window with a single tab I have to do one of the following:

• Unmaximize, drag over from top bar, maximize. The normal way its done for all windows.

• Open new tab, drag original tab over, close new tab.

Both of these are more inconvenient than the original, so I wanted to know if there's a way to disable this limit on moving tabs so that I am able to do the old functionality before the update. I have already checked chrome://flags/ to no avail.

odd, still works for me.
Can you drag the tab to the second screen and only drop it when you've dragged it up to the top of the screen to maximise it ?

Oh, yes, I should specify this only is in play when the window is maximized. Good to bring that up, Caver Tim

I like how they forced disable a useful feature without telling anyone again.
Same like the go back with backspace a while back need to download a separate extension just to make it function like before the update.
Can't they put these 'quality of life improvement' in settings so we can disable it ourself IF we didn't want to use it...

I can confirm that this happens to me as well on the 78.0.3904.97 build.

Another thing that also changed with this, related to tabs, is you cannot right click on an existing tab to open a previously closed tab. Now you have to click either on the + or the empty space to get that in the context menu.

The fact that this seems to not be the case for other people makes me think this is a bug which only affects certain people, so you can't really yell at Google for changing a quality of life thing. However, I would like to see this fixed asap.

I've been dealing with this issue for a while now, myself, and it's getting extremely frustrating. Part of my browsing habits include opening multiple different pages from the same site on different windows, such as having 10-12 different youtube videos spread across 2-3 different windows, and it used to be that I could consolidate all the windows into one by first separating all the tabs from one window into their own individual windows, and switch to have the destination window immediately under the active tab (Which is forced fullscreen, BTW) and simply drag the single tab and drop it onto the window right under it.

If that sounds complicated, that's because it is. I don't even know if I explained it right and made sense...

Anyways, with my current inability to drag single tabs off the top of the screen, I'm just getting more and more irritated, and wondering what the hell the devs were thinking, removing the ability to drag and drop...

I also just updated to the latest version (78.0.3904.108 as of writing this) a few minutes ago, but the issue persists.

Another thing I'd LOVE to see? Being able to select or deselect multiple tabs (Perhaps by using a method similar to dragging out a box like you do in your save files), and being able to mass-drag multiple tabs all at once, perhaps with an 'invert selection' feature? That shouldn't be hard. Being able to do that with my save files tells me that the devs might already know how to implement that kind of feature.

I had this issue as well. The solution that worked for me has been posted in other forums. It seems to be a Windows issue. On Windows 10, go to settings>system>multitasking and enable 'snap windows'.
