High CPU usage in main Chrome process after some usage 0 Recommended Answers 90 Replies 1224 Upvotes

Since a couple of updates ago (probably since 75?) I see the Chrome main process is taking huge amount of CPU for no specific reason. I couldn't relate it to any specific website or extension, as the single process eating up the CPU is the main one.

Restarting Chrome doesn't make any difference. It starts taking 100% of all 4 cores, and then slows down to eat one and a bit after all tabs are loaded. Rebooting the computer seems to do the trick some times, but I can't be restarting the system multiple times a day during work.

What can I do to track down the issue? Every day I check if a new update solves the matter (I've just updated to 78), but there's two weeks I'm having to deal with this, and it kinda slows down the computer.

Experiencing the same issue as Igor and Bob above; my current version is 83.0.4103.116 (Official Build) (64-bit).
If this is not resolved quickly, I would agree with Bob that this is highly suspicious.

I have been seeing this odd, over 100% cpu, in the main chrome process for the past day as well. I have restarted chrome several times and this one process just stays at over 100% all the time. I watch my processes carefully so I know this process has not been using cpu like this before and it isn't a specific tab that is causing it. I hope google looks at these posts because this is unacceptable and causing god knows how much wasted power on the grid and wasted computer cycles.

Reporting the same issue, but my PC can handle the incredible amount of CPU power needed to run Chrome. Especially on YouTube.

Linux Mint 19.3

This did start happening exactly 2 days ago. July 9, 2020

I've had this same problem the past few days. Disabling the AdBlock plugin fixed it for me.

Hope that helps!
