To:  Google Chrome Team And Cor,

I tried resetting the Google Chrome Browser To Its Default settings but when I still use this tool at the end of the scan there is an error.  The error says an error occurred while searching for harmful software and then it said search failed.  Is there anything else I can do to make this error to stop occurring and so I could use this tool again the normal way?  Let me know on all of this on here.  I hope I get a solution that I could do to make this tool work again like it should.  Talk to you all later on.

Hi again Denise,

Didn't my reply to your other topic answer your question?
The actual program "Chrome Cleanup Tool" can't be used anymore. The functionality is now built-in in Chrome. You can find it at the bottom of the setting page (even under advanced) at: "Clean up computer" or via this page:
chrome://settings/cleanup (copy and paste this into the address bar)

The same problem for me.

Google seems to become infected and slows down to start. I remove chrome and reload it. Use the tool as described with the same message when it stops.

I used your link and it did exactly the same thing again.

The tool is worse than useless as it just wastes time with nothing to show at the end when it stalls.
Get rid of it.
Also, I downloaded a fresh version of chrome directly from Google and had been using the tool at the bottom of the advanced settings. If it is "built in" why is this tool still there?

Hi Peter,

So you did run a malware scan, for example with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (free) and read this Help Center page: Remove unwanted ads, pop-ups & malware?

After doing that, please also check if you have extensions in Chrome or programs on your computer you don't recognize or didn't install yourself. Programs can be found via the Control Panel of Windows. Extensions of Chrome can be found on this page: chrome://extensions.

When you removed Chrome, did you also reset the user data folder? Try the following:
Perform a clean re-install of Chrome:
  1. completely close Chrome
    How to close Chrome completely:
    1. close all windows of Chrome
    2. open the Windows Task Manager [ctrl + shift + esc]
    3. if you see any open Chrome processes (chrome.exe), end them
  2. uninstall Chrome and choose to remove your user data when asked
  3. remove your user data or just rename it to keep it as a backup
How to remove the User Data of Chrome:
    1. open a folder in Windows
    2. paste this address into the address bar of that window
      %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome
    3. rename the folder “User Data” to “User Data_OLD” (this is your backup)
  4. reboot your computer
  5. now, reinstall Chrome with the offline installer for Chrome
