Background data usage of Chrome on my Mobile increased. [ Android Version 9 ]
0
My Mobile has Android one platform running Android Version 9. From yesterday, my Chrome browser data usage increased considerably ( my mobile provider alerted me of high data usage, which prompted me to check ) showing as foreground : 2.55 GB and background 35.66 MB. For years, my average usage per month was 3.5 GB. Now I have switched off Mobile data not to go over my monthly limit. My browsing pattern has not changed. The only thing I checked yesterday was trying System Update two or three times, just to check whether Android 10 is available. Please let me know whether I need to re-install Chrome browser to solve this problem.

Turn off light mode. Or don't leave any opened tabs in background. For some reason sites with build in miners are able to use you mobile data if you have light mode on and opened tab in background.

I'm experiencing the same issue, but i've lite mode turned off. Today I noticed that Chrome was causing the data usages. The first sign of the excessive data ussage with Foreground data was on 18 september. I'm also running android 9 with chrome 77.0.3865.92

I am having a catastrophic version of this same issue. Last month Chrome used 9.3 gigabytes of data in the background. This month it took 4.27 GB in just 10 days! Today, it spiked wildly and used over 2 GB in less than 20 minutes. Theory: Google Chrome is stealing my unused data.

Identical issue.
Chrome used 3.31gb of data on a 30min dog walk this morning.
Phone was powered on, but not in use in my pocket. Only realised when it beeped to say I'd reached my data limit and that "Google Chrome has used more data than usual"

I'm having similar problem on Nokia 5.1 Plus Android One phone.
Chrome 78.0.3904.96 - Android 9

Sudden unexplained spike in Chrome's foreground data usage.  Background data seems usual use.

Am on a pre-paid phone plan with 3gb data per month, recharged only last week and Chrome has used 1.6gb by itself with my usual internet browsing usage.

Tried switching off Background Data for Chrome, tried using Chrome Lite Mode and tried phone's Data Saver.

Nothing is working - Chrome is still using too much data for the amount of browsing I am doing and compared with previous months.

Same issue. Chrome used all my mobile data in about 24 hours. Also on a pixel. Serious problem here.
