Chrome 76 has anchor bug: anchors not working correctly on web pages 0 Recommended Answers 0 Relevant Answers 12 Replies 171 Upvotes

Recently, I noticed that the anchors on my web page stopped working in Chrome, and I believe it has to do with the latest update.

I have links to a page that go to a specific anchor (using the <a name> for the specific section and # after the URL to go to that specific section on that page), but recently it stopped working on Chrome, no more than a week ago.

The anchors work fine in Firefox and other browsers, and they also work fine in Chrome 75 - I guess this is just an anchor bug in Chrome 76, which is the most recent version put out in Chrome.

Please help - can Google issue a fix or an update that cleans up this bug? Thank you!

Chrome 77 is now in the stable channel. Has anyone checked to see if that update cured the bug?

No, the issue still persists. For me it occurs when I click an anchor link to a different page that the one I am currently at. This works fine in other browsers.

I had the same issue. Also starting around the time you reported the bug and only in Chrome. The solution that worked for me was to remove the <a> tag altogether. Instead,  placing the name of your anchor as the ID of any other tag such as the relevant <div>.
If you have an anchor with the name 'myanchor'. Give the contents main tag that id.

i.e.
<a name="myanchor"></a>

becomes, for example:

<div id="myanchor">...</div>

Hope this helps.

ID doesn't make the difference. Anchor works when the anchor's clicked or when a page's opened with anchor in the URL but scrolling then refresh the page, it doesn't respect the anchor on the URL.

Any updates on this? I just updated to version 78 and the issue still persists.

Still having the issue in build 79. However, when I reload, the file opens to the right place.

Had to roll back to version 75 as not even 79 has been fixed
Maybe the devOPS don't know how to fix it?
Has Google posted this as a security concern, I have not seen anything... any ideas

So I was running into some weirdness on this as well. Thought it was a bug but it's just a feature difference between browsers.

The first time the page loads with an anchor in the url: `http://somesite.com/#gohere` it should load and go to that location on the page.

But if you scroll to the bottom for example, then reload the page or put the cursor in the URL bar and press "Return/Enter"... the page will simply reload exactly where you are.

I would've expected the reload and especially hitting return on the url bar to follow that link but no.

However, if you have a link on page with `<a href="#gohere">Go to that spot on the page</a>` ... that should still work as intended.

We are also having this issue with our Anchored links on Chrome.

I too am having this issue... any workarounds?

Issue confirmed, a workaround should be doable with javascript by setting the scrollposition:
window.scrollTo(0, 1000);
