How do I Make English my Default Language

Hi All,

Wondering how to make English your default language or having any issues setting your language to English? Please follow these steps to switch your language to English.
Note that you may need to update your language settings in two or all three of the ways listed above.

Thanks and let us know if you are still having issues!

I've done everything recommended in Help sections but still get search results in Chinese. I've uninstalled Chrome and re-installed but no luck.

I am ready to stop using Google and Chrome completely because of this. There's got to be a solution that works.

Hello, my computer has changed the language to Spanish, and I am not quite positive how. I have tried both of the links to try to restore the language to English, yet have not succeeded to actually get the whole computer back to english. I was wondering if the Chrome Community Team had any suggestions on what I could do to change it back, because I have no more ideas on this topic. If you could help me out asap, that would be great! Thanks!

@REDTRUCK CHASER Sorry you are getting search results in Chinese! Can you try going to www.google.com/ncr? Let me know if that works.

@Anna Ambrosy That issue must be so annoying to deal with! It does sound like an issue slightly outside of Chrome browser since it's affecting your whole computer, but hopefully I can still give you some tips. Could you let me know what operating system your computer is (i.e. Windows XP, Windows 7/8, Mac OS X, etc.---if you are unsure you can also just visit http://whatsmyos.com/)?

Previously I had an issue with Google Play Store and Google Maps.  After all three steps, Play Store defaults to English but Maps still displays directions in Japanese.  I do purposely have Japanese set as a second language in both the Chrome language settings and Search language preferences -- in each case, Japanese is below US English as a choice.  In Google Maps (while looking at central US maps) it displays some place names in English, some place names in Japanese, and displays all directions in Japanese.  Do I have to remove Japanese as a language entirely to get English-language results displayed in English?

I was having the same issue after changing the language by mistake. I couldn't make it work through browser interface. I tried changing the language in Preferences file which is stored under AppData for every user but that also didn't work. Finally, I figured it out that there is a file named Local State which is written every time chrome shuts down and that was the reason changing only Preferences file was not working. I changed setting named app_locale (after killing all chrome instances from task manager) to look like this

"app_locale": "en"

and then restarted the browser and it worked. The browser was displaying in English language again.

The location for this file is C:\Users\<user-name>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Local State on Windows.
