Malware pop up on my iPad locks up Chrome

Hello, I had a Adware/ malware pop up in Chrome that greyed -out all other chrome functions. It was from AppStore-promotion.xyz. The pop up said iThe AppStore wanted to make me a millionaire! How nice. I couldn't clear it and ultimately uninstalled then reinstalled Chrome on my iPad2 . I don't know what version of chrome it was. I installed it during 2015..My version of IOS on this iPad2 is 9.3.1. First, I would like to know how to deal with these in the future The only help and tips I was able to find were for computers, Mac or Windows. Second, Is that after the reinstall, all my bookmarks are gone. I'm sad because I especially liked Chrome's bookmark functions. I would like to retrieve these if possible and if not then ensure they are protected in the future. Thanks in Advance, KC

Hi Kones,

Welcome to the Google Chrome Help Forum, and thanks for posting!

Let us begin by making sure that 'Background App Refresh' option is selected for Chrome: Settings >Chrome >Background App Refresh. Also, please make sure that your Chrome is updated to the latest version. Also, I'd recommend you get in touch with your device manufacturer to check if there is any suggested malware removal software that they might recommend for these issues.

With regards to your bookmarks, unfortunately, recovering deleted bookmarks is not a feature supported on Chrome. However, if you've synced your data across devices, you can sign into Chrome to find your bookmarks on your chrome profile. Having said that, I completely understand that this feature would add to browsing experience on Chrome, and I'd appreciate your feedback about the same using steps from this link.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Johnny

I am having the same problem except my pop ups are more sinister. Talks about my browser is blocked by police and to unblock please enter payment information (or something similar). No way to use Chrome except to uninstall and install again from iTunes Store. I am also using latest iOS 9.3.1 and yes I am using latest version of Chrome as I had to reinstall and it happened again 2 days later. I was also surfing using the incognito mode, normally if Chrome crashes it restarts and all the incognito mode pages are gone. But with this pop up attack, Chrome never crashes and even after deleting it from the active Apps list and starting Chrome again it continues to pop up these threats. So I had to reinstall Chrome. I read online that this can happen with Safari as well and the solution there is to delete website data and restart browser. There is no way to do that on Chrome on iOS, please provide a way to reset Chrome when it gets hijacked or even better make it invulnerable to this sort of attack.

Thanks for your patience!

Are the devices you're using jailbroken? Does it happen in other browsers?

Keep me posted.

Best,
Johnny

I've got it too. Not jail broken. All fully updated. I've had this before and by clicking on the pop ups ok/cancel and then VERY quickly clicking on the close browser /window, I've been able to get out of this loop but this latest version is reacting so fast the close tab isn't working.

I'll have to note saved tabs on another device and delete chrome.
