Transition from firefox, need to find tab mix plus alternative

Unsure which version of Chrome you are using? Type chrome://help into your omnibox (where the URL is). Your version number will be listed there along with the option to update if available.

Have you checked our known issues page? If your issue is not there, please provide a detailed description here:

I have located and installed all plugins that I used with firefox in the chrome store but tab mix plus. Unfortunately from my brief google search the developers of that plugin have no interest in developing it for chrome. To keep it short I won't go into reasons why I'm giving chrome a try but I do need some of the functionality of that plugin for me to be able to make the switch. With that said here is the list of what that plugin does that I need, thank you:

Opening a new tab with new tab button loads www.google.com

Opening a new tab opens a new tab next to the current tab being viewed

Open selection from history or bookmarks in a new tab next to current tab being viewed (vs opening in the current tab)

Open links that open a new window in a new tab instead

Switch to newly opened tab for all new tabs opened from all sources except for from links

Undo closed tabs with a very large closed tab history of at least 100 and restore the tab in it's original position

An all tabs list where I can tab/click on button to scroll through a vertical list of all the tabs currently in the window

Scroll the tab bar by drag left and right or by scroll buttons (chrome appears to have drag and drop move tabs so not sure how both would work)

Highlight unloaded tabs, unviewed tabs, and any other tab other than current one that doesn't fit either of those two descriptions using user defined color and style for text and tab background for each of the 3 types for me this is all tab background color same but unloaded tabs are red italic text, loaded but unread tabs are red not italic text, and ones that fit as other are black text, and current tab is bold black text

Lock, protect, and auto reload would be nice but I can live without as I don't use very much. Also display small icon on tab indicating these states

Tabs are of a fixed width and height defined by the user (oh my how I hated tabs shrinking as more were added) I nee to be able to read the tab title enough to know what page the tab is

Tab context menu has undo closed tab, undo closed tab list, and lock, protect, reload, auto reload tab; lock, protect, and auto reload feature I can live without

Did you ever find a good alternative to TabMix Plus for Chrome?

The add-ons (extensions) feature I'd pretty horrible. No sorting and shows you stuff that had nothing to do with what the search was. How Google had such a great web search engine and such a horrible search feature for this is beyond me. But anyways no there aren't even a conglomerate of add-ons (extensions) to fulfill the listed needs that tran mix plus covers. This is rather unfortunate since that means I'm stuck using Firefox even though I no longer want to. I guess what we need is one ore more developers that can port over or build from scratch tab mix plus for chrome.

Seriously, nothing even comes close?   Which is your favorite?

Tabs Outliner to me appear to be the best tab extension available. But even it is a far cry from tab mix plus. The rest, what few there are, I didn't even install because they either looked horribly designed or simply weren't even remotely close to meeting my needs/wants that tab mix plus offers on firefox. The short version: This best chrome has to offer tab extension only provided the tab list feature that is built into firefox but as a separate window. I couldn't even get all the features needed/desired by installing multiple plugins. If you read the long version you will see why I have drawn the conclusion I have.

The long version:There is no new tab feature or settings so you are stuck with chrome default or using new tab redirect extension. Not ideal but it did the job for making google.com my new tab page. However no open new tabs of any kind next to current tab (which is a game breaker for me). To be able to undo closed tabs you have to close the tabs from the plugin not the tab itself. So no correcting oops I didn't mean to close that tab. A positive note at least when you open the tab again it opens the tab where it was before. Sexy undo closed tabs extension appears to be good for the oops I didn't mean to close that tab scenario. But it lacks the part that is a deal breaker to me the right click on tab tab in the tab bar or on the current viewed page to undo closed tab. None I could find resized the tabs in the tab bar. Which means your stuck with chrome cramming them in the span of the tab bar. After 7 tabs they start shrinking in width. At 16 tabs you get 4 letters of the name of the tab. None of the plugins offer unloaded tabs. They simply offer a workaround in the form of closed tab you can re-open. The biggest game breaker of them all for me. As to perform the same actions I do with my tabs in firefox require more time and effort to perform them with the workaround. No tab bar appearance customization. Lock tab is found in a separate extension. Protect tab I couldn't locate one to provide it. Reload tabs functionality may be available in another extension (I gave up before this point so I didn't test the ones that come up in a search for it).

Ok so far while not ideally the way I would like it to be, that being everything in one tab extension. But these do an ok job. Here is what I have in extensions so far for the things I had listed:

New Tab Redirect: Opening a new tab with new tab button loads www.google.com

TabsPlus: Opening a new tab opens a new tab next to the current tab being viewed

TabsPlus: Open selection from history or bookmarks in a new tab next to current tab being viewed (vs opening in the current tab)

I need a link of this kind to test: Open links that open a new window in a new tab instead

Not covered yet by extensions added: Switch to newly opened tab for all new tabs opened from all sources except for from links

Sexy Undo Close Tab except the restore to original position: Undo closed tabs with a very large closed tab history of at least 100 and restore the tab in it's original position

Vertical Tabs: An all tabs list where I can tap/click on button to scroll through a vertical list of all the tabs currently in the window

No working solution to this one yet the
Enable Stacked Tabs in chrome://flags/ might work for some but not for me: Scroll the tab bar by drag left and right or by scroll buttons (chrome appears to have drag and drop move tabs so not sure how both would work)

On the tabs themselves nothing yet but a possible alternative for some would be Tabs Outliner with color options for saved, opened, and active tab in the extensions tab list window but not the tabs in chrome window. About half of this feature of TMP: Highlight unloaded tabs, unviewed tabs, and any other tab other than current one that doesn't fit either of those two descriptions using user defined color and style for text and tab background for each of the 3 types for me this is all tab background color same but unloaded tabs are red italic text, loaded but unread tabs are red not italic text, and ones that fit as other are black text, and current tab is bold black text

I haven't looked for one for this: Lock, protect, and auto reload would be nice but I can live without as I don't use very much. Also display small icon on tab indicating these states

Nothing yet on this feature which sort of ties in with the scroll-able tab bar feature needed: Tabs are of a fixed width and height defined by the user (oh my how I hated tabs shrinking as more were added) I need to be able to read the tab title enough to know what page the tab is

Not sure if it is from the extension but there is an undo closed tab right click on tab in tab bar and Sexy Undo Closed Tab covers the closed tab list: Tab context menu has undo closed tab, undo closed tab list, and lock, protect, reload, auto reload tab; lock, protect, and auto reload feature I can live without

FooTab might be the only possible working solution for not loading tabs that aren't the active tab or later become the active tab during the sessions. I just added this extension prior to posting this so it is untested to see if it provides the desired functionality. With that covered here is the list of all the extensions I currently have added in my attempt to make chrome a complete replacement for the current state of what Firefox does for me:

Adblock Plus
FooTab
New Tab Redirect
Session Buddy (I haven't thoroughly tested this one)
Sexy Undo Close Tab
Tabs Outliner (This one is nice for hierarchy organization of tabs kind of user I'm not sure I will keep this one)
TabsPlus
VerticalTabs

Wow! Thanks for the detailed analysis! Please keep us posted. I'm still on Firefox because of this, and it crashes several times a day...

This one is a showstopper for me. Please let us know if you resolve this:

Would one of these work for the tab-width issue when you have many open:

None actually resizes them and creates multiple rows, as Tab Mix Plus does in FF, though.

New thought:  Has anyone tried replicating the capability of TabMixPlus in IE?

It is frustrating.  I held off on switching to Chrome, partially because of tab management.  But I found some workarounds to make it usable.  And they took it away!

I can't find any older downloads of Chrome either, so I guess I'm SOL.
