Desktop notifications won't work

For some reason my desktop gmail notifications stopped working. I tried to re-active them through “settings” but at “desktop notification” it says that “This browser does not support desktop notifications. To enable notifications, upgrade your browser to Google Chrome.”

I have Google Chrome but still it doesn’t work.

When I open the gmail page at the top it has a warning which states that

“You are using a version of Internet Explorer that Gmail no longer supports. Some features may not work correctly. Upgrade to a modern browser, such as Google Chrome.”

I’m also using Internet Explorer 9.

How can I fix this problem?

I have the exact same problem. I would have assumed that GOOGLE CHROME would be able to answer/rectify this problem.

Same here! Using Chrome on a Mac, turned on Desktop Notifications for any mail plus in the chrome settings under Privacy/Content settings/Notifications I clicked 'Allow all sites to show desktop notifications' also, just to make sure, nothing is blocking it.

Why would Google offer a feature that obviously almost never works?? I'm reading about tons of users, Mac or Win, having the same issue...
Now that Google notifier isn't supported anymore, I need some alternative, even though 'Desktop Notifications' is not quite the same, but still.

GOOGLE please step in and HELP!

Last week I had the chrome notification bell icon in the Mac menu tray, but it only lasted a day. No matter what I try I can't get it back.

Okay, now it just worked... but only with the specific web page open that I want to receive notifications from! Why can't they get past this? I don't quit Chrome- it doesn't have an open window on my desktop, but the app is running. Why can't I get notifications without windows open? Seriously, if I have my Gmail or Verizon Messages page open, I don't need a notification while I'm looking at it. Make it offline notifications, please!

Exact same problem with chrome on mac, I use chrome for gmail, google calendar and google drive.
I have this bell thing on the menu bar but it never shows anything, it just sits there idle.
Please fix! I'd really like a mac desktop notification for google.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit and Chrome as my browser. I never seem to get Gmail notifications even though I have it enabled both in gmail and chrome desktop notifications applet. Only notifications I get are for hangouts and Google now.
