Chrome has become completely unusable, in almost every imaginable way.

Hello.

I've been using Google Chrome for years without a single problem to complain about.

I usually am on the internet a large portion of the day, and when I'm not doing that, I'm playing games or listening to music. When I go to sleep, I don't turn my computer completely off, I just put it into hibernation mode and tickle the mouse in the morning when I wake up. I do a restart every 3 days to keep my system unclogged.

I've been doing this routine for over a year, with no problems... until last night.

I did the usual, turned my computer in hibernate and went to sleep. When I woke up, I attempted to open Chrome to check Facebook/Reddit etc. The page loaded, but instantly became unresponsive. I couldn't interact with any elements of the webpage at all. A few moments later I got the Chrome has stopped responding error at the top of the screen, no big deal it happens sometimes, I'll just wait it out, right? Wrong. It stayed like that for over 10 minutes. So I opened task manager, killed the process, and relaunched. The same thing happened. I relaunched again and again and finally it appeared to work. I browsed the internet for about 3 minutes and then, boom, not responding. So I left to go get food. 2 hours later I come back, it is still not responding... I don't even understand how that's possible.

Along with this, when it does start not responding, and I try to minimize it or use winkey + d to show desktop, it doesn't work. It turns the entire window into a black box with the default win7 aero frame around it. Why? Who knows. Only solution is to ctrl + alt + delete and then kill the process in task manager.

How can I fix this? I really don't want to switch to another browser but this is just ridiculous.

Thanks for writing in to the Chrome Browser Forum and elaborately explaining to the Community the specifics of your problem.

I am not sure which troubleshooting steps you have already tried, but can you please try the recommendations below that users in the past have found helpful when they have browser crashes?
  • Can you please confirm that you are only referring to Chrome Browser, or if your other browsers (Firefox, Opera and/or Internet Explorer) are also having the same issue?
  • Please also refer to the two following Help Center Articles regarding possible reasons why Chrome is:

Thanks for the response.

In the link you provided, it gives examples like:

"Some third-party software can cause Google Chrome to crash. When this happens, you'll see the message "Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed" or "Aw, Snap!"."

This is not the case. I have had Chrome crash before, which wasn't a problem. What is happening to me right now is not crashing. For example, I'll explain what I attempted to do after I posted this message to try and fix it on my own.

I did a complete uninstall of Chrome. I uninstalled it via control center, then went in every folder Chrome stored files in (program files, program data, appdata) and deleted them all. There was not a single trace of Chrome left on my computer. Then, I reinstalled it. I signed into cloud sync (and it didn't sync anything, but that's a separate issue) and attempted to go to bookmarks to import my old bookmarks. before I even got a chance to click on the menu in the top right, the window froze. The application did not crash, nor did it give me a crash error message. It simply froze, the area where the tabs are at the top of the screen disappeared and was replaced by the standard Windows 7 file explorer bar as you can see here. It says, Google Chrome (Not Responding). It will stay like this indefinitely, as I said in my original post, it stayed like that for over 2 hours earlier today. The only way that I can make this stop is by opening task manager and killing the process manually. this happens, without fail, every single time I open the browser.


this is also the first time this has ever happened in my over 3 years of using chrome. literally a flawless run since I installed it on my computer 3 years ago, until this morning. I don't understand what could have possibly caused this but it's disrupting a lot of stuff I need to get done and relied on Chrome to get it done. I did a virus scan too, which came up negative.

Also, the fact that I was able to type this entire thing (Using internet explorer, arguably the worst piece of software ever made) should imply that only chrome is having this problem, I also tested firefox and opera.

I even tried to do what your link suggested I try, type chrome://conflicts in the address bar. I'll give you one guess on how that went.

I am having this exact same problem. It started this morning too. I to have tried reinstalling and it worked fine until I signed into chrome to sync my bookmarks back. Then after a few seconds it froze up and stopped responding; just as you described, I identical to the image. The only way to kill is to, like you said, end the process. I found that ending Chrome then deleting the “Chrome” folder in appdata/local/google causes the browser to start working again, but if I try to sync my stuff it again freezes up. <-- this is repeatable. I can use Chrome without trouble as long as I don't sign in. Not acceptable, obviously.
