Chrome is writing large TMP files almost every minute, filling up my hard drive

My temp folder (C:\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default) is growing exponentially and I can't seem to figure out why. According to the files, it started around October of 2017. I've had Chrome much longer than that so I'm not sure what's changed. From what I can tell, it's writing a new TMP file every minute or so. Sometimes two in a minute, sometimes as far spaced out as 5 minutes. Each TMP file ranges in size from 19-500+KB. When I realized what was happening, the folder was 66GB. I cleared it out and it's still going.

What I've tried so far:
* Disabling all extensions
* Clearing cache and cookies
* Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome
* Performed this command as referenced in this thread (/chrome/forum/AAAAP1KN0B0Yj79DgXaXSA): chrome://flags/#ignore-gpu-blacklist

I have no idea why Chrome is writing so many TMP folders, so large, so frequently and why they don't get cleaned up during normal methods (disk clean up, clearing cache, etc.)

Please help!

Hello Allison,

Welcome to the Google Chrome help forum.

I understand how inconvenient it can be when there are .temp files being generated on your computer. I also appreciate your efforts to troubleshoot the issue, however, could you please share a few details below to help me resolve the same:

Could you let me know if the same issue is repeated on any other device when accessing Google Chrome? This would help me analyze if the issue is specific to Google Chrome (or) the device?

Meanwhile, I'd recommend you to run Malwarebytes on your device to make sure malware if any exists on your device is eliminated from the scenario. Also, please clear your data by going to Settings > Apps > Chrome > Clear data.

Note: Clearing data will delete your bookmarks and other synced data. Sign in to Chrome before clearing data and enable Sync to access your data at a later time.

If the issue still persist, could you try creating a new browser profile using the steps below:
  • Quit Google Chrome completely.

  • In the Mac menu bar at the top of the screen, click Go.

  • Select Go to Folder.

  • Enter the following directories in the text field, then press Go.

  •                          ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/

  • Locate the folder called "Default" in the directory window that opens and rename it as "Backup default."

  • Try opening Google Chrome again. A new "Default" folder is automatically created as you start using the browser.

Let me know how it goes.
Regards,
Carl
