Introducing Chrome 33

Hi All,


Starting today, Chrome has officially updated to version 33. Chrome updates automatically but you can see changes in advance using our Beta or Canary versions. The update happens over a couple of days, so if you haven’t yet been updated, don’t worry, you will be soon.


What’s new?

Google Now Notifications: This popular Android and iOS feature gives you timely, useful notifications on your mobile device. Now, you can also receive Google Now updates on your desktop! Find out more about this feature in our blog post.


Google cloud print now offers offline support and if you use an Android device you will notice a progress indicator when you download files.


Notable Bug fixes & updates:

In the this release, you will see fixes for the Close X tab button, a return of consistency of input & text areas for Windows 8 users and a fix has been released for those experiencing malicious extensions claiming to be run by enterprise policy.


The return of arrows on scrollbars and the ability to hide the app shelf in Windows 8 mode will not be returning to Chrome until Chrome 34. You can download the Canary version of Chrome to access them now.

Important policy update: Coming MAY 1

Extensions restricted to Chrome Web Store: As first announced in the Chromium blog in November, all installed extensions now must be hosted through the Chrome Web Store. This is designed to protect users from unwanted & malicious extensions. This update does not yet have an official release date, but will be coming soon. Please read our FAQ to learn more.

I don't know when they were added to Chrome (Either version 32 or 33. I don't know because I usually don't close Chrome) but I find the non-instantaneous "transitions" useless. Examples: the sliding of the tabs on top when creating or closing tabs (acceptable) but the newly added ones are unnecessary: the appearings of dialog boxes, the appearings of print dialogs, the opening a drop-down menu or combo box, and the appearing box that comes up when right clicking and selecting "view page info". There are probably more that I haven't found out yet. Transitions waste time (any amount, however small, is still time wasted), CPU resources, and disk space (to contain the code for the transitions), and have little aesthetic appeal to me. In addition, the transition effect of the drop-down menu is not perfect. While the menu is closing, the space that the menu used to take is rendered blank in the entirety of the process, meaning that I can't see the text or images behind the drop-down menu until it disappears completely (the issue is less noticeable the drop-down menu is opening). Site that I noticed this observation include FanFiction, W3Schools, and http://symthic.com/bf3-weapon-comparison. In a future release, can there be an option to turn off transitions like in the "Developer Tools" of Android?

Chrome Version: 33.0.1750.117 m
Windows Version: Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1

An exaggerated example of menu transitions is in Upgrade Complete 2. Notice, after you go through the introduction, how long it takes to open the upgrade menu without any upgrades to the menu transition speed (not available in the 1-star level of the "Upgrades" upgrade). Another example is in Real Racing 3. If you play it, notice how when you enter a series, the game wastes time and resources shows three useless quick pans of your currently selected vehicle.

Ah, and here I thought I could actually use Chrome the way *I* want.  Now I have to add extensions to do so?  My computer is not super-new, so every extension slows things down.  If only you guys would have let me keep my new tabs page the way I wanted it.  So sad.

Can anyone say when should we expect the extension restriction to take effect? Tomorrow? Next week? Next month?
This is a very serious change and we need to prepare for it.

How I can downgrade Chrome to previous verision? I have poor eyesight and this update make new tab page useless for me. Make that damn additional search form optional if you so like it, but I don't think that it really helpful for someone/

You can fix the HORRIBLE new New Tab Page in 33 and the elimination of the "chrome://flags/#enable-instant-extended-api" option by using the link below. It does not include the bookmarks bar but everything else is back if you choose to use "chrome://apps/" link.


Do you remember when Google didn't force us in to options we HATE and we could personalize? Here's hoping those days return.

I am on Windows Vista and now Chrome keeps giving me blank screen no matter what I want to do.

Now I can't see the new tab page, settings, browse anywhere or search anything, all these give a blank page.

Even the "report an issue" feature crashed.


I tried reinstall Chrome. no use.

Yes on the hardware acceleration, and yes on hi DPI.  So, no change since v32, it seems...

Any idea when this "issue" will be fixed?  It simply seems counterintuitive to me that something that worked fine in an earlier version does NOT work in later ones, especially given the number of devices out there with more dots per inch than my TV!!!

But thanks for your time and attention - I can see you have lots of ppl sorta yelling at you...
