Search the web on Chrome

You can quickly find what you’re looking for on the Internet, in your bookmarks, and in your browsing history. A Chrome feature might not be available if your default search engine doesn't support it.
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. In the address bar at the top, enter your search.
  3. Select a result or press Enter.

Tip: As you enter your search, you may get suggestions based on your web and app activity. You can delete suggestions from your search history or hide sections of suggestions based on your activity when they appear. Learn more about your activity.

Search within a page

You can find a specific word or phrase on a web page on your computer.

  1. On your computer, open a page in Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More Organize and then Find and edit and then Find....
  3. In the search window, enter your search term.
  4. Press Enter to search the page.
    • Matches are highlighted in yellow. In the scrollbar on the right, yellow markers show where the matches are located on the page.

Tip: You can also use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + f (Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS) or  + f (Mac) to find a word or phrase quickly.
Search for words

You can find more info about a specific word or phrase on a page.

  1. On your computer, open a page in Chrome.
  2. Highlight a word or phrase.
    • On a PC: Right-click the highlighted content.
    • On a Mac: Hold Ctrl and click the highlighted content.
  3. Click the option to search with your default search engine. For example, you might find an option like "Search Google for emperor penguin."

Tips:

  • You can translate to your preferred language or get the definition when you select a word or phrase.
  • You can convert units when you select a number.
Search the web with images

You can learn more about an image with Google Lens. For example, you can use a picture of a dress to search for where to buy it, find similar dresses, or find that image elsewhere on the web.

Important: Set Google as your default search engine.

To learn more about an image:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. Go to a website.
  3. Right-click an image.
  4. In the menu, select Search image with Google.
    • If you right-click anywhere outside an image, from the menu, you can select Search images with Google and drag to select an image.

Tips:

  • Search results display on the Side panel. To display them in a new tab, click Open .
  • To search an image from the Side panel, click Search by image  or a suggested image under Search image on this page. Suggested images stay on your device and aren’t shared with Google. When you click on a suggested image, Google may collect information about that image.
Search web pages with Google Search side panel

If Google is your default search engine, you can use the Google Search side panel to access more information about the sites that you browse and the search tools that you use. While on a site, open the Google Search side panel to:

  • Generate key points from articles and other web pages.

To search a web page with the Google Search side panel:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. Go to a website.
  3. At the top right, select Side panel .
  4. At the top left of the Side panel, select the Down arrow Down arrow.
  5. Select Search.
    • To learn more about the text and images that you find, enter keywords from the web page.
