Check if a site's connection is secure

To learn if a website is safe to visit, you can check for security info about the site. Chrome will alert you if you can’t visit the site safely or privately.

1. In Chrome, open a web page.
2. To check a site's security, to the left of the web address, check the security status symbol:
   • Secure
   • Info or Not secure
   • Not secure or Dangerous
3. To find a summary of the site's privacy details and permissions, select the security symbol.

What each security symbol means

These symbols say how safe it is to visit and use a site. They tell you if a site has a security certificate, if Chrome trusts that certificate, and if Chrome has a private connection with a site.

Secure

Information you send or get through the site is private.

Even with this icon, always be careful when sharing private information. Check the address bar to make sure you're on the site you want to visit.

Info or Not secure

The site isn't using a private connection. Someone may be able to review or change the information you send or get through this site.

On some sites, you can visit a more secure version of the page:

1. Select the address bar.
2. Delete http://, and enter https:// instead.

If that doesn't work, contact the site owner to ask that they secure the site and your data with HTTPS.

When you turn on HTTPS-First mode, Chrome attempts to load all sites over HTTPS. If you go to a site that doesn’t support HTTPS, Chrome displays a “Connection is not secure” warning and a “Not secure” image  in the address bar. Learn how to turn on HTTPS-First mode.

Not secure or Dangerous

We suggest you don't enter any private or personal information on this page. If possible, don't use the site.

Not secure: Proceed with caution. Something is severely wrong with the privacy of this site’s connection. Someone might be able to review the information you send or get through this site.

A "Login not secure" or "Payment not secure" message may appear.

Dangerous: Avoid this site. If you get a full-page red warning screen, the site has been flagged as unsafe by Safe Browsing. Using the site will likely put your private information at risk.

Choose which sites can show insecure content

1. On your computer, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, click More Settings.
3. Click Privacy and security  Site Settings.
4. Click Additional content settings  Insecure content.
5. Next to "Not allowed to show insecure content," click Add.
6. Enter the site's URL.
   1. To change an added site's specific default settings: Next to the URL, click More .
   2. Click either Allow, Edit, or Remove.

Learn about security certificates

When you go to a site that uses HTTPS (connection security), the website's server uses a certificate to prove the website's identity to browsers, like Chrome. Anyone can create a certificate claiming to be whatever website they want.

Manage device certificates on Mac & Windows

Chrome authenticates and secures HTTPS connections with website certificates. These certificates encrypt the link between a site and your browser.

The Chrome Root Program lists the root certificates trusted by Chrome to authenticate HTTPS sites. Learn more about the Chrome Root Program.

Chrome will add custom root certificates from the certificates used by your computer’s operating system. To review the certificates on your device:

1. On your computer, open Chrome .
2. At the top right, click More Settings.
3. Click Privacy and Security Security.
4. Under “Advanced,” click Manage Device Certificates.
