Set default search engine and site search shortcuts

You can use the address bar (omnibox) to search the web. In some countries, Google Search is Chrome's default search engine. In others, you may be asked to choose your default search engine. You can change your default search engine anytime.

If you notice unexpected changes in your search engine, you might have malware. Learn how to remove malware.

Set your default search engine

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Under "Basics," tap Search engine.
  4. Select the search engine you want to use.

Recently visited search engines will be added as options for your default search engine.

Using Google as your default search engine

When Google is your default search engine, your location is used for your searches in the address bar and on Google. Learn more about sharing your location.

To stop the use of your location in searches:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Chrome.
  2. Visit a Google search page, like google.com.
  3. To the left of the web address, tap Page info Default (Secure).
  4. Tap Permissions and then Location access.
  5. Select Block for current search engine.
