Text not displaying properly

If you see squares instead of text on webpages, or text is blurry or fuzzy, follow the steps below to try fixing the issue.

Squares show up instead of text

If you see squares instead of text, try changing the webpage's encoding.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More and then More Tools and then Encoding.
  3. Select an encoding or select Auto detect.
  4. If you choose Auto detect, Chrome will recommend the best encoding after looking at the webpage’s content. For a faster browsing experience, turn off Auto detect after you leave the webpage.

Text looks fuzzy or blurry (Windows only)

If text doesn’t look clear on your computer, try changing your font settings.

Step 1: Use the text tuner

  1. On your computer, click the Start menu: Start menu or Start menu.
  2. In the search box, type ClearType.
  3. Click Adjust ClearType Text.
  4. In the ClearType Text Tuner, check the box next to "Turn on ClearType."
  5. Click Next, then complete the steps.
  6. Click Finish.

Step 2: Change your Windows appearance settings

If Step 1 doesn't work, try changing your Windows appearance settings. This step is most helpful for displays with high resolution.

  1. On your computer, click the Start menu: Start menu or Start menu.
  2. In the search box, type Appearance.
  3. Click "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows."
  4. Next to "Smooth edges of screen fonts," uncheck the box.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Open Chrome again.
