Add & open Chrome apps

On your Chromebook, you can add and open apps from the Chrome Web Store.

Important: Chrome Apps in the Chrome Web Store are only supported on Chromebooks and won't work on Windows, Mac, or Linux after December 2022. You can still use the Extensions and Themes that are available in the Chrome Web Store.

Add a shortcut to a website as an app

For Windows, Linux, and Chromebook users, you can add a shortcut to a website on the internet as an app in Chrome.

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Navigate to the website you want to add as an app.
  3. At the top right, click MoreMore.
  4. Click More Tools.
  5. Click Create shortcut.
  6. Enter a name for the shortcut and click Create.

Add an app from the Chrome Web Store
  1. Open the  Chrome Web Store.
  2. Search or browse for the app you want. 
  3. Click Add to Chrome.
Open apps in other browsers

An app can be opened in another browser if the URL starts with http://. To open the app, follow these steps:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Open the app and confirm the URL
  3. Copy and paste it into the address bar of another browser to open.
Open an app on a Chromebook
To see and open your apps on your Chromebook, click the Launcher Launcher.
