Translate pages and change Chrome languages

You can use Chrome to translate pages. You can also change your preferred language in Chrome.

Translate pages in Chrome

You can use Chrome to translate a page into other languages.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Go to a page that you want to translate.
  3. At the top, select the language that you want to translate to.
    • To change the default language, tap Settings Settings and then More languages and select the language.
  4. Chrome will translate the page this one time.
    • To always translate pages in this language, tap Settings Settings and then Always translate [language].

Request translation in Chrome

If you don’t find Translate at the top of a page, you can request a translation.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More More and then Translate.

If Chrome doesn't offer to translate, try refreshing the page. If you still can't tap Translate, the language might not be available for translation.

Highlight text to translate

To translate text:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Go to a page that you want to translate.
  3. Highlight the text that you want to translate.
  4. Tap Google Translate.
    • To play back text in a text-to-speech supported language, tap Speak .

Tip: If more than 5,000 characters are highlighted, you can select Translate Full Page.

To change the languages:

  1. Tap the language that you want to change.
  2. Scroll to find the language you want or enter it in the search bar.
  3. Tap the language.

Change your default translation settings

You can use Chrome to translate pages based on your preferred language settings.

Turn off translation

You can control whether Chrome will offer to translate pages.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More More and then Settings Settings and then Languages.
  3. Turn off Translate pages.

Manage translated languages

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Tap More More and then Settings Settings and then Languages.
  3. Tap Add language and then the language that you know or want to translate.
    • Websites in multiple languages display in the first language available according to your preferences.

If you select 'Never translate' for a language while on a page, it will appear here.

Tip: If you want to translate a language from your list, tap the language and select Offer to translate.

Undo 'always translate' a language

If you select to always translate a language, you can undo your translation preferences.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Go to a page that you want to translate. The page starts to translate automatically.
  3. At the top, tap Settings and then Never translate [language].
