Customize your New Tab page in Chrome

Depending on your default search engine, you may be able to control what appears below the search box on your New Tab page.

To customize your New Tab page, you must be signed in to your Google Account and use Google as your default search engine.

In some countries, you may need to manage your linked Google services to use Chrome history for personalization and other services.

Customize your New Tab page

When you open a new tab, under the search box, you can find shortcuts to websites you visit often. If you haven’t used Chrome before, it shows you some popular sites. You can customize the shortcuts on your New Tab page.

Customize shortcuts

Important: Custom shortcuts don’t sync to other devices.

On your New Tab page, you can customize shortcuts to pin your favorite websites or quickly find your most visited sites.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Open a New tab.
3. Below the search box, you can:
   • Open a shortcut: Tap the shortcut to open it.
     • Tip: To open the shortcut in a new tab or in Incognito, touch and hold the shortcut and choose how you want to open it.
   • Share a shortcut: Touch and hold the shortcut you want to share. Choose to Copy Link or Share.
   • Manage your shortcuts: Touch and hold the shortcut you want to update. You can:
     • Pin or unpin a shortcut: Tap Pin site or Unpin site.
     • Edit a pinned shortcut: To update your pinned shortcut’s name and URL, tap Edit Site.
     • Remove a shortcut permanently: Tap Never Show This Site.
   • Add a shortcut:
     1. On the right of the bar, tap Add new.
        • You might have to swipe to the right to add a shortcut.
     2. Enter the name and URL.
     3. Tap Save.

Customize your New Tab page background

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Tap New Tab .
3. At the top left, tap Customize homepage .
4. To select your background, you can:
   • Choose from the available preset backgrounds: Under “Customize homepage,” select your preferred background.
   • Browse Chrome’s library:
     1. Under “Customize homepage,” tap Add Themes.
     2. Select your preferred background.
   • Choose a color background:
     1. Under “Customize homepage,” tap Add Colors.
     2. Select your preferred background color.
        • This applies to both light and dark mode.
   • Upload your own image:
     1. Under “Customize homepage,” tap Add Camera Roll.
        • If Chrome doesn’t have access to your camera roll, the “Chrome would like to access your photos” pop-up appears:
          • To allow Chrome access to all your photos: Tap Allow access.
          • To allow Chrome access to only specific photos:
            1. Tap Select photos.
            2. Select the photos you want Chrome to have access to.
          • To decline access: Tap Don’t allow.
     2. Select your preferred background.
     3. To crop the image, pinch close or open.
     4. Tap Save.

Delete a background option

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Tap New Tab .
3. At the top left, tap Customize homepage .
4. Under “Customize homepage,” touch and hold the background you want to delete.
5. Tap Delete Background.

Continue where you left off

When you browse on multiple devices, you can easily resume browsing the last open tab from any of your devices on your current device.

Important:

• Make sure you’re signed in to the same Google Account on all devices.
• Make sure recent tabs are opened within the last 24 hours.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Tap New Tab .
3. Under “Continue with This Tab,” tap the last tab from any of your devices.
   • To hide “Continue with This Tab:”
     1. Touch and hold Continue with This Tab.
     2. Tap Hide “Continue with This Tab”

Manage suggested articles

When you open a new tab, you may find suggested Discover articles. If you’re signed in to Chrome with your Google Account, depending on your settings, suggested articles are based on your recent Web & App activity and your interactions with the suggested articles, like when you tap on or scroll past an article.

Tips:

• If you indicate that you’re not interested in a topic or publisher, you won’t get suggestions from them again.
• To find the latest articles in the “Following” section on your iPhone or iPad, you can manually follow sites and searches.

Customize your cards and feed experience

To change your cards and feed experience in the New Tab page:

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Tap New Tab .
3. At the top left, tap Edit .
4. To customize your New Tab page, you can turn the Site Shortcuts, Cards, or Discover Feed on or off.
   • Site Shortcuts: These are shortcuts to sites you’ve visited lately on your device.
   • Cards: These are the most relevant features for you at different times.
     1. To customize the cards you want to find, tap Cards.
     2. Turn on or off any of the following:
        • Get Set Up: Tips to get the most out of Chrome. Learn how to manage Chrome Tips card.
        • Shortcuts: Your most used Chrome items.
        • Continue with This Tab: Your last open tab across all your devices.
   • Discover Feed: A custom feed made for you. This includes News, Sports, and Weather.
     1. Tap Discover Feed.
     2. Select either:
        • Following: Manage the topics and searches you’re interested in.
        • Hidden: Find and edit topics you’ve hidden from your account.
        • Activity: Control your Google Account data.

Tips:

• By default, “Site Shortcuts,” “Cards,” and “Discover Feed,” are turned on.
• When you sign in to Chrome, your preferences for Site Shortcuts, Cards, and Discover Feed automatically sync from your previous device across iOS devices. Your customized New Tab Page theme also syncs across devices. Learn how to sync across devices.

Manage your Discover suggestions

You can manage the activity used to personalize your Discover suggestions:

• Stop suggestions based on new activity:
  1. Next to "Discover," tap Settings Manage Activity.
  2. On the left, tap Menu Activity controls.
  3. Turn Web & App Activity off.
• Delete per article: If you’re signed in to your Google Account, you can review and delete your Discover activity feed in My Activity.
• Get the latest articles: On your Discover feed, from the top of the screen, pull down to refresh and get your updated content.
• Manage your Discover ads: You may find ads in your Discover feed. You can manage your ad settings in My Ad Center.

Turn Discover articles on or off

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Next to "Discover," tap Settings Turn Off or Turn On.

Manage suggested article interests

Important: You must be signed in to Chrome with your Google Account to use these features.

• To manage interests for all your suggested articles, next to "Discover," tap Settings Manage Interests.
• To let Chrome better know your interests, next to an article in Discover, tap More Not Interested in [topic] or Don't Show Content from [publisher].

Manage specific articles

To remove an article:

1. At the bottom right of the article, tap More .
2. Tap Hide this .

To save an article to read later:

1. Touch and hold on the article, or tap More .
2. Tap Add to Reading List .

To open an article in a new tab:

1. Touch and hold the article, or tap More .
2. Tap Open in New Tab.

To preview an article:

1. Touch and hold the article.
2. To open the article, tap the article preview.

To turn link previews off:

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Tap More Settings .
3. Find and tap Content Settings.
4. Turn Show Link Previews off.

Manage Chrome Tips card

You can learn more about the features of Chrome on your iPhone or iPad with Chrome Tips.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. To manage the Chrome Tips card:
   • From the card settings menu:
     1. On the cards, swipe left until you find the Settings .
     2. Turn Chrome Tips on or off.
   • From the Customize Home Page:
     1. Tap New Tab .
     2. At the top left, tap Edit Cards.
     3. Turn Chrome Tips on or off.

Safety Check on New Tab page

On the New Tab page, you can find the Safety Check card to review:

• Compromised passwords stored in Google Password Manager.
• Your Safe Browsing status.

Tips:

• To hide the Safety Check card on the New Tab page, select More Hide Safety Check card.

Hide or unhide stories in another language

To hide stories in another language:

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Open a new tab.
3. Find "Discover."
4. At the bottom right of a story, tap More Don't show stories in [language].
   • To get your updated stories, from the top of the screen, pull down to refresh.

Tip: This feature may not be available for all stories.

To unhide stories in another language:

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open Chrome .
2. Open a new tab.
3. Find "Discover."
4. Next to "Discover," tap Settings Manage Hidden.
5. Under "TYPES OF INFO," unhide the language you want to bring back.

Follow and unfollow the sites in your Following section

If Google is your default search engine, you can follow and manage sites and searches. To follow a site:

1. Go to the site you want to follow.
2. Tap More Follow.

To follow a search:

1. Open Chrome .
2. Search an interest in the address bar.
3. In the results, tap Follow or Follow this search.

To find and manage followed sites and searches in one place:

1. Next to "Following," tap More Manage Interests.
2. Select a site or search you want to unfollow.
3. Tap Following.
