User experience policies

For administrators who manage Chrome browser or ChromeOS devices for a business or school.

Here are just some of the policies you can use to customize your Chrome users' browsing experience.

Show Home page button

Enable this policy to show the Home button on the toolbar of Chrome browsers or ChromeOS devices. Clicking the Home button opens your default homepage (see below).

Set a default homepage

Enable this policy to set the homepage that opens when users click the Home button in either Chrome browser or on ChromeOS devices.

Sample value: https://www.example.com

Enforce from:

  • Admin console—Chromeand thenSettingsand thenUsers & browsersand thenHomepage
  • Windows Group Policy—Configure the homepage URL
  • Mac / Linux preference name—HomePageLocation

Open new tabs to homepage URL

Enable this policy to open new tabs to a page you specify, such as your homepage.

Enforce from:

  • Admin console—Chromeand thenSettingsand thenUsers & browsersand thenNew tab page
  • Windows Group Policy—Configure the New Tab page URL
  • Mac / Linux preference name—NewTabPageLocation

Set default search engine to Google

Enable these policies to use google.com as the search provider when users type in the address bar at the top of any Chrome window. 

Enforce from:

  • Admin console—Chromeand thenSettingsand thenUsers &  browsersand thenOmnibox search provider
  • Windows Group PolicyDefault search provider (folder)
  • Mac / Linux preference nameSeveral policies

Policy details for Windows/Mac/Linux: 

Customize ChromeOS device wallpaper

Applies only to ChromeOS devices.

Upload a custom image to use as the background on users' sign-in screen and desktop.

Enforce from:

Turn spellcheck on or off

Enable this policy to let users use the spellchecker. 

Enforce from:

  • Windows Group Policy—Enable spellcheck
  • Mac / Linux preference name—SpellcheckEnabled

Turn spellcheck languages on or off

Enable the SpellcheckLanguage policy to allow users to specify languages in their spellchecker. 

Enforce from:

  • Windows Group Policy—Force enable spellcheck languages
  • Mac / Linux preference name—SpellcheckLanguage

Enable the SpellcheckLanguageBlocklist policy to not allow users to specify languages in their spellchecker.

Enforce from:

  • Windows Group Policy—Force disable spellcheck languages
  • Mac / Linux preference name—SpellcheckLanguageBlocklist
