Update your Chromebook’s security

You can install a firmware update to give your Chromebook stronger security protections.

The update is optional, but you should install the update if:

  • You’ve set up hardware-backed certificates or verified access. Learn what these are.
  • You want to keep your Chromebook settings, apps, files, and other info as secure as possible.

Important: This update will erase your Chromebook and reset it to factory settings. Everything will be deleted from your Chromebook, including your files, apps, and data. Make sure to back up your files and sync your account settings before you install this update.

Install the update

Warning: If the update stops before it finishes, your Chromebook could get damaged. Follow these steps carefully, and let the update finish installing before you use your Chromebook.

  1. If you haven’t yet, back up your files and save your account settings.
  2. Plug your Chromebook in to power.
  3. At the bottom right, select the time. Select Shut down Power.
  4. Turn on your Chromebook.
  5. On the sign-in screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
  6. In the box that appears, select Powerwash and then Continue.
  7. Your screen will turn black, then the update will install for up to 10 minutes. To prevent damage to your Chromebook, don’t turn it off, close the lid, or unplug from power.
  8. Follow the steps that appear and sign in with your Google Account. Note: The account you sign in with after you reset your Chromebook will be the owner account.

Note: If the update doesn’t work, you might need to recover your Chromebook. If the update doesn’t work more than 3 times, your Chromebook might become unusable. If you see "The security module on this device is not working," contact your manufacturer to repair your Chromebook.

Reset your Chromebook again

If you’ve already installed the update and reset your Chromebook, you might receive a prompt to Powerwash your device again. Some devices require a second Powerwash before the firmware update is complete. To finish the update, follow the on-screen steps to reset your device. For more info, read the Trusted Platform Module firmware documentation.
