Downgrade your Chrome version (Windows)

For Google Workspace and Chrome Browser Enterprise Support customers only

If your users are having problems with Chrome on Microsoft^® Windows^® computers after a Chrome version update, you might need to downgrade it to a previous version.

How to downgrade Chrome

For information about how to roll back to the 3 latest major release of Chrome Browser, see Manage Chrome updates (Windows). To downgrade to earlier Chrome Browser versions, follow the steps below.

Before you begin

• Downgrading Chrome automatically deletes all user profiles and cache data, so only do it if absolutely necessary.
• Downgrade Chrome for a small test group before you do it for your entire organization.
• Check to make sure that downgrading Chrome solves the issue.
• If the issue is caused by a plugin, you can block it using policies instead of deploying a Chrome downgrade.

Step 1: (Optional) Contact support

Open a support case to track the Chrome downgrade. It also helps us understand why you had to downgrade. We want to get you back to the latest version of Chrome as quickly as possible.

1. Contact support by phone or via the Google Cloud Support Center (GCSC).
   Make sure you're signed in to your administrator account to access your PIN and the phone number or link to GCSC.
2. Explain why you need to downgrade Chrome to a previous version.
    

Step 2: Downgrade Chrome

You can downgrade to the previous stable version of Chrome.

1. If you use the UserDataDir or DiskCacheDir policy settings to override default locations, check to make sure that:
   1. They're not set to the root of a volume, such as D:\.
   2. They're not used for data other than Chrome data.
2. To prevent Windows computers from automatically updating Chrome shortly after the downgrade, temporarily halt auto-updates. Don’t forget to turn on auto-updates again after your issue is resolved.

3. Open a command prompt.

   1. To downgrade to the version that you last manually installed using the MSI file, enter msiexec /fvomus GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise.msi ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1

   2. Otherwise, enter msiexec /i GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise.msi ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1

4. Relaunch Chrome on a Windows computer and check the version to make sure the downgrade was successful.

5. Make sure all your users relaunch Chrome on their Windows computers after the downgrade is complete.

When users relaunch Chrome, they might get a message that their profile is from a different version. If so, they need to create a new browser user profile.
