Set up Office file handling for managed users

Overview

For administrators who manage ChromeOS devices for a business or school.

No matter whether you rely on Office for the web in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, ChromeOS allows you to optimize how your users can open, edit, download, and save Microsoft 365 files, thereby creating a desktop-like experience.

Core functionality

  • Microsoft OneDrive integration—Microsoft OneDrive is integrated into the Files app and therefore allows users to access their Microsoft 365 storage with one click.
  • Desktop-like Office file handling—For both Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, Google optimized the user experience for common file types ((Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files). Instead of manual file uploads and file editing in the browser, users upload and open files in dedicated windows with just a double-click.
  • Single Sign On (SSO) for Office for the web—Regardless of whether you use Microsoft Entra ID (previously called Azure Active Directory) or a third-party IdP, signing in to ChromeOS devices automatically signs users into Office for the web.
  • Enterprise policies allow for an automatic setup of the Office for the web integration in user sessions and restrictions of allowed EntraID accounts.
  • Supported Office file types—Word (doc, docx), Excel (xls, xlsm, xlsx), PowerPoint (ppt, pptx).

What you need

  • ChromeOS devices with version 133 or later that are enrolled in your organization using Chrome Enterprise Upgrade or Chrome Education Upgrade.
  • Microsoft 365 subscription or Workspace subscription for each user.
