Search your history in Chrome with AI

This article is intended for administrators and end users who want to learn about what data is collected by this feature and how it’s processed by Google.

Use of this service is governed by Google’s Terms of Service and Google Privacy Policy.

This feature allows users to search their browsing history based on page contents, not just the page title and URL.

To use this feature, users need to:

  • Be on a desktop device in the US.
  • Turn on the feature:
    1. On a computer, open Chrome.
    2. At the top right, select More More and then Settings.
    3. Select You and Googleand thenSync and Google services.
    4. Under Other Google services, select History search, powered by AI.
    5. Turn on History search, powered by AI.

Configure generative AI settings in your Admin console

Before you begin: To configure settings for a specific group of user accounts or enrolled Chrome browsers, put the users or browsers in an organizational unit or group.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Devicesand thenChromeand thenSettings. The User & browser settings page opens by default.

    If you signed up for Chrome Enterprise Core, go to Menu and then Chrome browserand thenSettings.

  3. (Optional) To apply the setting only to some users and enrolled browsers, at the side, select an organizational unit (often used for departments) or configuration group (advanced). Show me how

  4. Scroll to Generative AI.
  5. Click the setting you want to configure. Learn about each generative AI setting.
  6. Click Save. Or, you might click Override for an organizational unit.

    To later restore the inherited value, click Inherit (or Unset for a group).

Settings typically take effect in minutes, but can take up to 24 hours to apply for everyone.

Note: When the policy is set to improve AI models, the data used may include prompts, inputs, outputs, feedback, source materials, and related information, depending on the feature. It may also be read by human reviewers, for the sole purpose of improving Google’s AI models.
