Set up Legacy Browser Support for Microsoft Edge in IE mode

For administrators who manage Chrome browser on Windows for a business or school.

If your organization disabled Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) on users’ devices, Microsoft Edge is responsible for Internet Explorer compatibility. As an admin, you can configure Legacy Browser Support (LBS) so that users can use Microsoft Edge in IE mode to view legacy websites that require IE compatibility.

Requirements

• Microsoft Edge version 87 or later
• Chrome browser version 87 or later

Configure LBS

Step 1: Download Chrome browser components

Download the appropriate Chrome browser for enterprise bundle (64 or 32-bit). Go to Download Chrome browser for enterprise.

Check to make sure that you have the correct LBS MSI version 7.4.0 or later installed:

• Windows 32-bit—LegacyBrowserSupport_7.4.0_en.msi or later
• Windows 64-bit—LegacyBrowserSupport_7.4.0_en_x64.msi or later

Note: If you previously downloaded the bundle, the LBS MSI should automatically update.

Step 2: Configure Chrome browser policies

Click below for the steps, based on how you want to manage these policies.

Admin console

Can apply for signed-in users on any device or enrolled browsers on Windows, Mac, or Linux. For details, see Understand when settings apply.

1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

   Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

2. In the Admin console, go to Menu  DevicesChromeSettings. The User & browser settings page opens by default.

   If you signed up for Chrome Browser Cloud Management, go to Menu  Chrome browserSettings.

3. To apply the setting to all users and enrolled browsers, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit.
4. Go to Legacy Browser Support.
5. To open some URLs in an alternative browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer:
   1. Click Legacy Browser Support.
   2. Select Enable Legacy Browser Support.
   3. Click Save.
6. To specify which browser to use as an alternative:
   1. Click Alternative browser path.
   2. Enter ${edge}.
   3. Click Save.
7. (Optional) Customize LBS. For details about LBS settings, see Set Chrome policies for users or browsers.

Group Policy

Applies to Windows users who sign in to a managed account on Chrome browser.

In your Microsoft Windows Group Policy Management Editor (Computer or User Configuration folder):

1. Go to Administrative TemplatesGoogleGoogle Chrome.
2. Turn on Enable the Legacy Browser Support feature.
3. Specify which browser to use as an alternative:
   1. Turn on Alternative browser to launch for configured websites.
   2. Under Options, enter ${edge}.
4. (Optional) Customize LBS. For details about LBS settings, see Chrome Enterprise policy documentation.
5. (Optional) To make URL matching more strict, enable Sitelist parsing mode. Set the policy to 1=More compatible with Microsoft IE/Edge enterprise mode sitelists. For details about the BrowserSwitcherParsingMode policy, see Chrome Enterprise policy documentation.

Step 3: Configure Microsoft Edge browser policies

In your Microsoft Windows Group Policy Management Editor (Computer or User Configuration folder), set the policy to use the Legacy Browser Support for IE Mode in Edge extension:

1. Go to Administrative TemplatesMicrosoft Edge.
2. Automatically install the Legacy Browser Support for IE Mode in Edge extension on users’ devices:
   1. Turn on Control which extensions are installed silently.
   2. Under Options, enter the Legacy Browser Support for IE Mode in Edge extension ID:

      (Optional) Beta version

      To test the beta version instead, enter the Legacy Browser Support for Microsoft Edge - Beta extension ID and update URL:
      ebojbgfomggiamdflnhekjfkmdbeblpb;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx

      (Optional) Fallback version

      A fallback version of the extension is also available. It is always one version behind the latest stable version. If LBS breaks after an update, you can temporarily use the fallback version. Enter the Legacy Browser Support for Microsoft Edge extension ID and update URL:
      gpnmalhjhaeefiaejecehgmldefmkgjo;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx

      Note: Due to a restriction in Microsoft Edge, only domain-joined machines can force-install the fallback version.

3. Enable IE integration:
   1. Turn on Configure Internet Explorer integration.
   2. Under Options, select Internet Explorer mode if you want sites to open in Microsoft Edge using IE mode.

Step 4: Configure the sitelist

LBS and Microsoft Edge should use the same sitelist so that all sites that load in Microsoft Edge use IE mode.

Option 1: IE sitelist

Chrome browser

• Admin console—On the Users & browsers settings page, scroll to Use Internet Explorer site list and select Use Internet Explorer’s Sitelist policy as a source or rules.
• Group Policy—Open Group Policy and go to Administrative TemplatesGoogleGoogle Chrome. Enable Use Internet Explorer's SiteList policy for Legacy Browser Support.

Microsoft Edge

Internet Explorer

Turn on Enterprise Mode and use a site list. For details, see Microsoft documentation.

Option 2: External sitelist URL

Chrome browser

• Admin console—On the Users & browsers settings page, scroll to Legacy Browser Support site list and enter the URL of the XML file. URLs can start with http://, https://, or file://.
• Group Policy—Open Group Policy and go to Administrative TemplatesGoogleGoogle Chrome. Enable URL of an XML file that contains URLs to load in an alternative browser. Under Options, specify the URL of the XML file.

Microsoft Edge

Open Group Policy and go to Administrative TemplatesMicrosoft Edge. Enable Configure the Enterprise Mode Site List. Under Options, enter the URL of the XML file.

Internet Explorer

No action needed.

Test your installation

1. On a test computer, verify that the policies are correct for:
   • Chrome browser—Open Chrome browser and go to chrome://policy
   • Microsoft Edge—Open Microsoft Edge browser and go to edge://policy
2. If you don’t see the correct policies or settings, open a command line and enter gpupdate /force to force Group Policy Management Editor to update.
3. (Optional) To view details about LBS in Chrome, open Chrome browser and go to chrome://browser-switch/internals.
   • In the URL Checker box, enter the URL to see which browser opens it.
   • Under Sitelist, review the list to see which URLs open in the alternative browser.
   • Under Greylist, review the list to see which URLs open in either browser.
   • Under XML sitelists, review the list to see which URLs are configured.
4. (Optional) To view details about IE mode in Microsoft Edge, open Microsoft Edge browser and go to edge://compat.
