Set up sign-in using smart cards on managed ChromeOS devices

Chrome version 83 and later

For managed ChromeOS devices.

As an admin you can enable users to sign in using smart cards on the managed ChromeOS devices in your organization.

Before you begin

To use devices with smart card sign-in, your users need:

  • Chrome Enterprise Upgrade for each device you want to manage.
  • SAML SSO identity provider (IdP) that supports smart cards, for example Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS).
  • The Smart Card Connector app and smart card middleware app installed.
    • Several types of smart cards are supported, such as a Yubikey with an integrated Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card or a Common Access Card (CAC) smart card. To check if a card is supported, see Deploy Smart Cards on ChromeOS.
  • If not using Yubikey, a USB smart card reader with a chip card interface device (CCID) interface that is marked as supported or should work on the page: https://ccid.apdu.fr/ccid/section.html.

Known limitations

  • ChromeOS currently does not support configuring custom trust roots and intermediates on sign-in. Make sure your setup doesn’t require additional trust roots or intermediates.
  • ChromeOS has limited support for custom intermediates on sign-in. Only the custom intermediates that are configured as part of device networks, such as EAP-TLS/PEAP networks, are available. For details, see Set up networks for managed devices (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN).
  • The smart card should use an RSA key.

Set up sign-in using smart cards

Step 1: Configure your SAML identity provider

Configure the SAML IdP with the needed user accounts and to use the smart card-based authentication for them. A typical example of an IdP is Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS).

Step 2: Configure SAML SSO in the Admin console

Enable SAML SSO for the domain in the Admin console. For details, see Configure SAML single sign-on for Chrome devices.

Step 3: Force install the login screen apps

Force-install the Smart Card Connector app and the CSSI Smart Card Middleware app in the Login screen tab. For details, see Automatically install login screen apps.

Step 4: Configure the login screen apps

Configure the Smart Card Connector app to allow the DriveLock middleware app by adding the following configuration to the Smart Card Connector app:

Step 5: Auto-select certificates during sign-in

There are several ways to set up the auto-selection of certificates:

  • (Recommended) To control client certificates for single sign-on (SSO) sites, enter a list of URL patterns as a JSON string.
    The user certificates that match that pattern are auto-selected on SAML IdP pages.JSON string configuration example:

  • (Recommended) Use the DriveLock middleware parameter filter_auth_cert to automatically filter authentication certificates where PIV cards are used. This does not impact other cards.
    1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

      Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

    2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Devicesand thenChromeand thenSettingsand thenDevice settings.
    3. Under Sign-in settings, follow the link to the login screen apps page.
    4. Click on the DriveLock Smart Card Middleware (CSSI) app.
    5. In the Enter a JSON value field type:
      {

    6. Click Save.
  • If you cannot filter certificates exactly, you can specify that the user is prompted to select a client certificate on the sign-in screen when more than one certificate matches. For details, see Prompt when multiple certificates match on the sign-in screen.
    Note: If you set up none of these options, and multiple certs are available, Chrome selects a certificate. However, there are no guarantees that Chrome selects the same certificate in upcoming Chrome versions.

Step 6: (Optional) Direct users directly to the SAML IdP page

When you enable SAML SSO IdP Redirection, single sign-on users can navigate directly to your SAML IdP page without entering their email address. For details on how to enable SAML SSO IdP Redirection, see Configure SAML single sign-on for Chrome devices.

Step 7: (Optional) Configure security token removal actions

You can specify what action is taken if a user removes their smart card. For details, see Security token removal.
Note: Before configuring this setting, ensure that the Smart Card Connector app and smart card CSSI middleware app are installed in-session for the user.

Step 8: (Optional) Prevent smartcard protected accounts to become secondary accounts

If a smart card protected account is added as a secondary account, users are not forced to use their smart card to sign in, they can use a simple password, fingerprint, or PIN to sign into or unlock their device. You can block users from adding smart card protected accounts as secondary accounts, by setting the Add restrictions on a managed account's usage as a secondary account on ChromeOS policy.

Resolve common issues

Is your card reader supported?

  • Check the list of supported readers here: CCID list.
  • Test your smart card reader:
    1. Sign in to a ChromeOS device.
    2. Install a Smart Card Connector app.
    3. Install a CSSI Smart Card Middleware app.
    4. Plug in the smart card reader.
    5. The CSSI app should show the following status:
      • Reader ready
      • Please insert a smart card into your reader
    6. If your reader is not supported, consider using a compatible reader, such as a Yubikey instead.

Is your smart card type or Yubikey supported?

  • Test your smart card or Yubikey:
    1. Sign in to a ChromeOS device.
    2. Install a Smart Card Connector app.
    3. Install a CSSI Smart Card Middleware app.
    4. Insert your Yubikey into the USB slot or your smart card into the reader.
    5. The CSSI app should show the following status:
      • Ready
      • Reader and smart card ready for requests
  • If your smart card is not yet supported, contact support.

Note: For Yubikeys, make sure Yubikey slot 9a / authentication is used.

Is your smart card certificate readable and supported?

  • Test your smart card or Yubikey:
    1. Sign in to a ChromeOS device.
    2. Install a Smart Card Connector app.
    3. Install a CSSI Smart Card Middleware app.
    4. Insert your Yubikey into the USB slot or your smart card into the reader. The reader and smart card are ready for requests.
    5. Press the Test button in the CSSI app.
    6. The CSSI app should show the following status:
      • Signing successful
      • A signing operation has been successfully performed

Note: If your smart card is not readable but is supported, check your smart card configuration.

Is the smart card integration with your IdP working?

  • Test your smart card integration with your IdP:
    1. Sign in to the ChromeOS device as a non-smart card user.
    2. Plug in the smart card reader.
    3. Install the Smart Card Connector app and the CSSI middleware app.
    4. Open a browser.
    5. Open a service that requires smart card-based authentication with your IdP. For example, ADFS.
    6. Enter the email of the smart card user, proceed, select the smart card certificate, and enter the PIN.

Note: If your IdP integration doesn’t work on a ChromeOS device, check your IdP configuration.

Is your IdP configuration with GAIA SSO working?

  • Test your IdP configuration with GAIA SSO:
    1. Sign in to the ChromeOS device as a non-smart card user.
    2. Plug in the smart card reader.
    3. Install the Smart Card Connector app and the CSSI middleware app.
    4. Open an incognito window (Shift+Ctrl+N).
    5. Navigate to accounts.google.com. Make sure you are not signing in as a super admin.
    6. Enter the email of the smart card user, proceed, select the smart card certificate, and enter the PIN.

Note: If this doesn’t work, check your SSO configuration.

Test your smart card setup on the login screen

Important: Login screen debugging capabilities are very limited for security reasons. Make sure you complete all the troubleshooting steps first. Trust roots and intermediate certificates are not available on the login screen.

Reporting Bugs

If you run into problems during deployment, you can submit a bug report on the issue. Bug reports must contain:

  • A description of the issue and instructions to reproduce it, preferably including a screencast.

  • The website you are trying to connect to. File separate bug reports for separate websites.

  • System, card, and reader Information.

    • ChromeOS version

    • Type of smart card reader

    • Smart card information—smart card vendor, type, and profile

  • Smart Card Connector logs. The screen for the Smart Card Connector has a link at the bottom that allows the user to export the logs. This copies all logs onto the clipboard. Use any text editing app to save those logs and add to the bug report.

  • Middleware app logs. Each middleware app has its own method to extract logs. For example, in the DriveLock app, logs can be extracted from the developer console.

    1. Go to chrome://extensions.

    2. On the top-right corner, select Developer mode.

    3. Scroll to the DriveLock extension and select background page.

    4. At the top, select Console.

    5. Right click anywhere in the list and select Save as… to export the logs.

  • Network logs. Some issues might be related to the way Chrome is handling client connections. On devices with Chrome 85 or later, you can export logs into a zipped .tgz file. For details, read How to collect Chrome device logs.
