Why can't I upload PDF files to Chat in my iPad???

Do you know the file size? Google Chat does have a file attachment limit and that may be the reason.

Sounds like this may be a iOS issue because I'm able to upload PDF's in Android for files less than 200 MB.
If you would like I can escalate this to the team.
A quick work around would be to upload the file in Google Drive and then share the document via a link and then drop the link into Google Chat.
Please let me know if you would like to me escalate this issue.

In the iOS Chat App, are you trying to attach the PDF from ‘files’ or the ‘drive’ option?
You may find you can select the file to attach if you add the file to your Google Drive.
It does seem the Chat app can not select PDF files directly from the ‘Files’ folder.
Agree with Rupert, you may need to use Google Drive to share the PDF if it exceeds the allowed file size which is 200 MB, You may also want to consider sending it as a screenshot, .png or .jpg so it reduces the file size.
PDF files are usually larger than PNG files because they contain images, layering, and raw data. PNG files are smaller because they only store images and use lossless compression to retain image quality.

When attempting to share/attach a pdf in Google Chat, although pdf files were visible in the folders I looked in, they were not selectable.
I am escalating to see if this is a known issue, or working as intended.
I would meanwhile suggest you share Feedback within Google Chat to report your experience and expectation to upload a PDF to Google Chat from iOS. (circle with three dots in top right of screen in Google Chat, while in a space, or conversation, or from the 'hamburger' menu when on the chat main screen.)
