I'm not getting Google Chat notifications

If you don't get notifications, you may need to update your device settings or check your Google Chat notification settings.

Understand app notifications

Some Google Chat applications can adjust notification settings to send updates, including:

  • @notify messages: These messages are for critical or time-sensitive information. They work like @all messages to get immediate attention and ignore your 'Do Not Disturb' status, muted conversations or notification settings.
  • @silent messages: These messages are for low-priority updates. They minimise disruption by working like system messages.

Tip: Only applications or bots can send @silent or @notify messages. You can't send these message types.

Troubleshoot issues with Google Chat notifications

This article explains how to troubleshoot these situations:

I don't get any notifications

If you don't get any notifications, check the notification settings on your mobile device.

  1. On your mobile device, open Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications and then Chat.
  3. Make sure that app notifications are turned on.
  4. Check whether Google Chat app notifications are also turned on.

Tip: The settings menu on your device might have a different name for 'Notifications'. For more info on how to access app notification settings, go to your mobile device's online help.

I occasionally don't get notifications

On your computer, close active Gmail and Google Chat browser tabs. When you’re active in a browser, notifications appear there instead of in the mobile app. If you’re not active in Google Chat, notifications appear on all devices that are signed in to your Google Account.
