Now that you’ve switched from Slack to G Suite, here are some tips on using Google Chat to collaborate with your team, whether in a 1:1 direct message (DM) or a dedicated group workspace.

Send a direct message to a person

  1. Sign in to Chat or Gmail.
  2. Under Chat, click a name, enter a message, and click Send "".
  3. If the name isn’t under Chat, click Find people, rooms, bots or click Start a chat "".
  4. Enter a name or email address. Suggestions appear as you enter text.
    To send a direct message to someone outside of your organization, enter their full email address.
  5. Select the person that you want to message.
  6. Enter a message and click Send "".
    Suggestions include everyone in your organization, even if they don't have Chat.

Send a direct message to a group

  1. Sign in to Chat or Gmail.
  2. Under Chat, click a group name, enter a message, and click Send "".
  3. If the group name isn’t under Chat:
    • In Chat, click Find people, rooms, botsand thenStart group conversation.
    • In Gmail, under Chat, click Start a chat""and thenStart group conversation.
  4. Enter a name or email address. Suggestions appear as you enter text. 
  5. Click Message or Done "".
  6. Enter a message and click Send "".
    Suggestions include everyone in your organization, even if they don't have Chat.
Join a channel
Preview and join a room
  1. Open Chat.
  2. At the top left, click Find people, rooms, bots.
  3. Click Browse rooms.

    The rooms that you're directly invited to appear at the top of the list. Enter a room name to quickly find a room.

  4. (Optional) To preview a room, point to the room name and click Preview.
    When you preview a room, you can read messages, but you can't participate in the conversation or get notifications.
  5. Click Add "" or Join in the preview to join the room.
  6. Click Open to open the room.

Create a channel
Create a room

You can chat with both people within your organization and with external guests.

  1. Sign in to Chat or Gmail.
  2. Next to Rooms, click Create""and thenCreate room.
  3. Enter a room name.
  4. (Optional) To add a room avatar, click Choose an emoji""and thenselect an emoji. If you don't select an emoji, a default avatar is used instead.
  5. Enter the names or email addresses of the people and groups that you want to add or select from the suggestions. Suggestions include everyone in your organization, even if they don't have Chat.
  6. (Optional) To allow people from outside your organization to join the room, check the Allow people outside your organization to join box.

    Important: You won't be able to change this setting later.

  7. (Optional) To notify invitees, check the Notify people via email box.
  8. Click Create.
  9. (Optional) To add more people and bots to the room, click Add people & bots, enter the name, and then click Send.
 
Edit a message

Point to your chat message, then click one of the following:
  • Edit ""—Make your changes, then click Update.
  • Delete ""—To confirm, click Delete.
Add styles and emoji to your message

You can add formatting to your chat messages by including special characters in the text.

  • To bold text, add asterisks * before and after the text you want bolded.
    For example, if you type *Tuesday*, the chat will display Tuesday.
  • To italicize text, add underscores _ before and after the text you want italicized.
    For example, if you type _every week_ , the chat will display every week.
  • To strike through text, add tildes ~ before and after the text you want struck through.
  • To create an inline code block, add backticks ` before and after the text you want in a code block.
  • To create a multiline code block, add three backticks ``` before and after the text you want in a code block.

You can also click Emoji "" and select the emoji you want to add.

Leave a channel

  1. Sign in to Chat or Gmail.
  2. Next to a room name, click More""and then Leave.
  3. Click Leave room.
Delete messages
Delete an entire DM
  1. Sign in to Chat or Gmail.
  2. On the left, next to the person's name, click More ""and thenDelete conversation.
  3. Click Delete to confirm.
Upload and share files
Upload and share files
  1. Sign in to Chat or Gmail.
  2. Enter your message and choose an option:
    • To attach a file from your computer, click Upload "".
      The file is not added to Drive. Other users get the file directly in the message.
    • To attach a Drive file, click Google Drive "".
      When you send the file, you'll be warned if the room or someone in a direct message doesn't have access. If you have Edit access to the file, you'll see an option to grant access. If you grant access to a room, it also applies to people who join the room later. If people leave the room, they lose access to the file unless they’re given access individually or through another group.
  3. Select the file that you want to send.
  4. Click Send "".

  1. Sign in to Chat.
  2. At the top, click Search "".
  3. On the left, select a room or click All rooms and direct messages.
  4. In the search box, enter search text.
  5. (Optional) To narrow your search, click people and content types (such as images or videos). 
  6. Click Go to thread to open the result.

Manage your notifications
Manage your notifications
  1. Open Chat.
  2. At the top right, click Settings ""and thenSettings.
  3. Under Desktop, click the Down arrow "" and choose an option:
    • All Messages—Get a notification for all direct messages and all messages in rooms.
    • New threads, threads I’m following and direct messages—Get a notification for all direct messages, the first message of every new thread, and all threads you’re following.
    • Threads I’m following and direct messages—Get a notification for all direct messages and threads you’re following.
    • Only @mentions and direct messages—Get a notification for direct messages and @mentions in Rooms.
    • Off—Turn off all notifications.
  4. (Optional) To hear a sound for incoming notifications, check the Play sounds box.
  5. (Optional) To get chat notifications in a pop-up window in Gmail, check the Show chat push notifications in Gmail box.
  6. (Optional) To set mobile notifications, under Mobile, click the Down arrow "" and choose an option.
  7. (Optional) To turn email notifications for unread messages on or off, under Email, select Only @mentions & direct messages or Off.

    Email reminders apply to messages that you haven't read after 12 hours. They are not sent for @mentions.
