Create a room

Create a room in Google Chat to provide a place where a team can communicate and collaborate.

Before you create a room, decide:

  • If you want people outside your organisation to join: If you allow external people, they need a Google Workspace account with another organisation or a personal Google Account.
  • If you want the room to have threaded or unthreaded replies: By default, rooms have a single stream of unthreaded messages. You can turn on threaded messages instead.

Important: You can’t change these settings after you've created the room.

Tip: History is always on in threaded rooms. If your organisation allows it, you can turn history on or off in unthreaded rooms.

  1. Sign in to Chat or Gmail.
  2. Next to ‘Rooms’, click Create or Find a room "" and then Create room.
  3. Enter a room name.
  4. (Optional) At the top left, click Choose an emoji "". If you don't select an emoji, a default avatar is used.
  5. Enter names or email addresses of people and groups that you want to add. You can also select from suggestions. Suggestions include everyone in your organisation, even if they don't have Chat.
  6. (Optional) To allow threaded replies, select Use threaded replies

  7. (Optional) To allow external people to join the room, select Allow people outside your organisation to join. If your administrator doesn’t allow this feature, you may not have this option.

  8. (Optional) To notify invitees, select the box next to ‘Notify people via email’.
  9. Click on Create.
  10. (Optional) To add more people and bots to the room, click Add people and bots. Enter names or emails. Click Send.
