Create a room

Create a room in Google Chat to provide a place where a team can communicate and collaborate.

Before you create a room, decide:

  • If you want people outside your organization to join: If you allow external people, they need a Google Workspace account with another organization or a personal Google Account.
  • If you want the room to have threaded or unthreaded replies: By default, rooms have a single stream of unthreaded messages. You can turn on threaded messages instead.

Important: You can’t change these settings after you create the room.

Tip: History is always on in threaded rooms. If your organization allows it, you can turn history on or off in unthreaded rooms.
