Edit or delete a message in Google Chat

If you make a mistake or need to update a message, you can edit or delete the message.

Important

  • When you edit a message, you can’t go back to the previous edit or the original message.
  • When you delete a message, you can’t undo it.
  • Chat notifications may include the original message.
  • After you (or other members in a conversation) delete a message, the message is permanently removed from your Google Account and can’t be recovered.
  • If you're in a space, you can delete messages sent from the Chat app.
  • You can download previously edited messages from your Google Account. Learn how to download your data.

Edit a sent message

  1. On your computer, go to a conversation and hover over your message.
  2. Click Edit .
  3. Make your changes.
  4. Click Update.

Delete a sent message

  1. On your computer, go to a conversation and hover over your message.
  2. Click More and then Delete .
  3. To confirm, click Delete.

Learn why you can't edit or delete a message

  • You can’t edit messages from apps, but you can delete them.
  • If you use a personal account, you can’t delete messages when:
    • You’re in a space a different organization started.
    • You send a direct or group message to a Google Workspace account.
