If you make a mistake or need to update a message, you can edit or delete the message.
Important:
- When you edit a message, you can’t go back to the previous edit or the original message.
- When you delete a message, you can’t undo it.
- Chat notifications may include the original message.
- After you (or other members in a conversation) delete a message, the message is permanently removed from your Google Account and can’t be recovered.
- If you're in a space, you can delete messages sent from the Chat app.
- You can download previously edited messages from your Google Account. Learn how to download your data.
Edit a sent message
- On your computer, go to a conversation and hover over your message.
- Click Edit .
- Make your changes.
- Click Update.
Delete a sent message
- On your computer, go to a conversation and hover over your message.
- Click More Delete .
- To confirm, click Delete.
Learn why you can't edit or delete a message
- You can’t edit messages from apps, but you can delete them.
- If you use a personal account, you can’t delete messages when:
- You’re in a space a different organization started.
- You send a direct or group message to a Google Workspace account.
