You can send direct messages to an individual or multiple people with Google Chat. For ongoing conversations with a team, you can create a space to message everyone at once.
If available, you can also use apps to automate your work. To use apps in Google Chat, you must use a work or school account and your Google Workspace administrator must give you permission to install apps.

Getting started
Recommended browser and screen readers
Google Chat recommends Chrome and:
- NVDA or JAWS on Windows
- ChromeVox on ChromeOS
- VoiceOver on MacOS
Use Chat as a web application
You can use chat.google.com as a web application rather than a webpage. When you use chat.google.com as a web application:
- Turn off the screen reader web browsing shortcuts. For details, go to Set up your screen reader below.
- Use Chat's keyboard shortcuts to navigate and read instead of your screen reader's commands. For details, go to Navigate around Chat below.
Tip: There are times when you should use chat.google.com as a web page and use screen reader browser commands. We point out these times as they occur.
Set up your screen reader
Some screen reader setup is required to use Chat as a web application:
- JAWS: Turn off the virtual cursor. Press Insert + Z until you hear 'off'.
- NVDA: Turn on focus mode. Press Insert + Spacebar until you hear a click sound like typing on a keyboard.
- ChromeVox: Turn off sticky mode. Quickly press Search twice until you hear 'sticky mode disabled'.
- VoiceOver: Turn off quick nav. Press Left + Right arrows until you hear 'quick nav. off'.
Important: There are multiple references to the 'reply box', but when the edit field receives focus it is not called a reply box by your screen reader. A thread reply box is named 'Reply' and the conversation reply box is named 'History is on' or 'History is off'. The name also tells you the state of history for that conversation.
Tip: If you use the JAWS virtual cursor to review messages, confirm that your web verbosity setting for group boxes is not ticked. Otherwise, you may hear 'Start group', 'the message', the contents of the message, 'End group' and then 'the message' again.
Open Chat
Go to chat.google.com. When you open Chat, the keyboard focus is on a list of messages in the 'Home' list inside the main landmark. The first time that you open Chat, you may want to explore it as a web page as described in the next section. After you complete your exploration, we recommend that you use Chat as a web application as described in Set up your screen reader above.
About the Chat interface
In Chat, there are four main areas:
- Top, presented by your screen reader as a banner landmark: Contains general settings and controls, such as your status, a search bar and the Google bar to switch to other apps and user accounts.
- Left navigation area, presented as a navigation landmark: On the left, you can find headings for shortcuts, direct messages, spaces and apps.
- Chat content, presented as a main landmark: Contains the most recent messages in the Home section, the currently selected Chat conversation or Spaces content. This area also includes a list of past messages, a message edit field for new messages and action buttons.
- This section can also include an additional pane containing the list of threads or the messages in a thread.
- Right side panel, presented as a complementary landmark: Provides embedded access to other Google products, like Calendar, Keep, Tasks and Contacts.
Shortcuts
Shortcuts include three sections:
Home:
- When you first open Chat, keyboard focus lands on the first message in the list of messages in the Home section.
- The first messages in Chat or Spaces are most likely the ones that you haven't read yet and later messages in the list are older.
- To open the focused message in the direct message or space, press the right arrow.
- To put focus on the reply box for the conversation, press Enter.
- To return to the list of messages in Home, after you read or reply, use the browser back shortcut.
- Note: The left arrow does not return to Home; it returns to the list containing the message.
Mentions:
- This section has a list of most recent messages in Chat or Spaces that mention you using the @ sign.
Starred:
- This section is the list of messages that you have 'Starred' by using the 'More actions' menu for any message. Learn more about starring a message.
From the list of messages in any of the Shortcuts sections:
- To navigate to the section heading, press the left arrow.
- To navigate to the Mentions and Starred section headings, use the down arrow.
- To navigate to the list of messages in that section, press Enter or the right arrow.
Tip: If focus doesn't move to the list of messages from Home, press Tab multiple times until the Unread switch, press Space to turn it off and then Tab to the list of messages.
Direct messages
Chats with one person or a group create a list of messages. By default, history is off and messages disappear 24 hours after they arrive. Spaces are for active long-term conversations with a team or group of people. History is on by default.
Spaces
While group chats can also be named, spaces always have a group name assigned when they are created. The name is often descriptive of the group or purpose and is initialised with a set of participants. Once created, navigating the conversation is just like navigating messages in a Chat conversation.
Threads
Threads are side conversations that might distract from the larger group conversation. While rare in direct messages with one other person, a thread can be created from any single message in a Chat or Spaces conversation.
Navigate around main Chat content
Single-letter keyboard shortcuts do not work when focus is in an edit field like the reply box. When you want to use a single-letter shortcut and focus is in an edit field, press Escape.
- When keyboard focus is in a reply box: The up arrow moves to the last posted message and allows you to edit and resend it.
- When keyboard focus is not in a reply box:
- The up arrow moves to older messages and the down arrow moves to newer messages.
- On a message, the Tab key navigates to buttons like: Add reaction (an emoji), Edit message (if you posted it), Mark as unread and More actions.
- In a Chat or Space conversation with threads:
- Move to older messages within the main conversation or within a thread with the up arrow.
- Move to newer messages within the main conversation or within a thread with the down arrow.
- Move to the oldest message in a thread in the thread panel with the right arrow.
- Move back to the message that started the thread in the main conversation with the left arrow.

- In the left navigation area for Chat:
- Up or down arrow to select a Shortcut section, direct message conversation or Space.
- Shift + Up or Down arrow to move to previous or next unread conversation.
- Ctrl + Up or Down arrow to move between Shortcuts, direct messages or Spaces.

- In the main message area:
- Use the up or down arrow to move within the messages.
- Use the left arrow to move to the left navigation area.
- Use the right arrow to move to the oldest message in a thread.
- When focus is on a message in a Chat, Space or thread conversation:
- Press Tab to links in a message, if present.
- The next three tabs go to the three most recent reactions for you to add.
- The next three tabs go to actions like: 'Add reaction', 'Edit' or 'Reply in thread'.
- The next tab goes to 'More actions' and may be followed by zero or more of:
- Current reactions to the message.
- 'Add reaction' button.
- Who has viewed your message.
- Thread replies.
- Suggested replies.
- Last tab goes to the 'Google Workspace tools' button. Press Shift + Tab multiple times to return to the message.
- When focus is on the message edit field:
- Up arrow to edit the last message that you sent.
- Escape and then up or down arrow to go through all messages.
- When focus is on a thread message: Left arrow to move the focus to the anchor message in the main conversation.
Advanced navigation
To improve your efficiency, use additional keyboard shortcuts.
Tip: With focus in a list of direct messages, list of Spaces, list of apps or Home, you can use the 'U' shortcut to toggle showing only unread contents.
Show a full list of keyboard shortcuts in Chat
- Turn off virtual cursor or browse mode in your screen reader.
- Press Escape if focus is on a message edit field.
- Press the question key (Shift + Slash).
To read the keyboard shortcuts dialogue, use Chat as a web page. Turn on virtual cursor or browse mode in your screen reader. The list of keyboard shortcuts is in a table, so use your screen reader's table-reading commands for easier navigation. The first tab stop is a link that you can activate to enable or disable some keyboard shortcuts. Make sure that the link says Disable, so that the extra keyboard shortcuts are available. When done, turn off virtual cursor or browse mode. To dismiss the dialogue, press Escape.
Tip: For a complete list of shortcuts in a new browser tab, you can open Google Chat keyboard shortcuts.

Read Home messages
Home is at the top of the Shortcuts section and receives initial keyboard focus. It contains your most recent conversations with the newest at the top. This includes individual chat messages, group space messages and even messages from apps.
- Press the down arrow to read the most recent message in the most recent conversations.
- Press the down arrow to move focus to recent conversations.
- Press Shift + Down arrow to jump to recent conversations with unread messages.
- Press the right arrow to open a conversation and move focus to the last message.

- Press the browser back shortcut to return focus to Home.
- Note: Left arrow from a message will not return to Home, but to the Chat or Spaces list of conversations.
Use the Summarise function to quickly review a conversation in Home:
Important: This feature requires an eligible Google Workspace subscription. Learn about Gemini features and plans.
- Navigate to a Home message that you want to summarise.
- Press Tab to the 'Summarise' button and press Enter.
- The focused button becomes a 'Close' button when the summary is available.
- Tip: Instead of steps 4 and 5, move focus down and then back up to read the summary when it is available.
- Use your screen reader web navigation to 'read the summary below'.
- When done:
- Toggle back to focus navigation.
- If needed, press Shift + Tab until focus is on the Close button.
- Press Enter.
Tip: If the Close button is not activated, navigating back to this message in Home will also include the summary. Only one summary will be expanded at a time.
Use Home filters
In the Home section of message, you can toggle filters to show only unread messages or only recent thread messages:
- Press Shift + Tab until focus is on the 'Unread' switch and press Space to toggle. When the switch is 'on', only unread messages will be included in Home.
- Tip: The 'U' keyboard shortcut will also toggle this button.
- Note: When all messages have been read, the Home section will be empty when unread is 'on'.
- Press Shift + Tab until focus on the 'Thread' toggle button and press Space to toggle. When the button is 'pressed', only messages in threads will be included in Home.
- Tip: The 'T' keyboard shortcut will also toggle this button.

- When the split pane option is 'current', pressing the right arrow on a message in Home will open in the split pane instead of in the conversation.
- This enables the use of the left arrow to return to the message in the Home section.
Read messages
Direct messages, also called DMs and Chat, are conversations between you and one or more people.
Spaces are for active long-term conversations with a team or group of people. The membership of a Space may change over time as people join or leave the conversation.
Any message in a conversation can become the beginning of a side conversation called a thread. Threads are presented in a right-side panel that opens as needed.
- Press H, then C (when keyboard focus is not in an edit field) to move to the Direct messages section of the left-hand navigation area. To move to the Spaces section, press the H, then R keyboard shortcut.
- Press the up or down arrow to select the conversation that you want to read.
- Tip: Your screen reader should say 'unread' before the conversation name when there are unread messages.
- Press Shift + Down arrow to move focus to the next conversation in the list that has unread messages. Press Shift + Up arrow for previous unread.
- Tips:
- Use the 'U' keyboard shortcut to toggle to show only conversations with unread messages. Note: The list will be empty when all messages are read.

- Use the Shift + I keyboard shortcut to mark the conversation as read.
- Press Alt + 0 (Shift + Alt + 0 on ChromeOS, Option + 0 on Mac) on a conversation with unread messages to open a dialogue that will announce the last message. Press Tab to the 'Reply to the conversation in a pop-up' button or press Escape to dismiss the dialogue.

- If there are more reactions, press Tab, then Shift + Enter again for the list of people who used that reaction.
- To add or remove yourself from an existing reaction, press Enter on the reaction.
- If the message includes a link, press Tab to move focus to the link, then press Enter to open the link.
To review recent messages but keep focus on the reply box:
- For Windows: Press Alt + {number}.
- For ChromeOS: Press Alt + Shift + {number}.
- For MacOS: Press Option + {number}.
- Replace {number} with 1 through 9 for the nine most recent messages.
Note: These shortcuts aren't available in a thread.
Navigate and read threads
Threads are side conversations that are 'anchored' by a message in a Chat or Space conversation. Only direct messages and Spaces can have threads.
As you navigate and read messages:
- If the message anchors a thread, then '<nn> replies' is after the message text.
- If the message anchors a thread with unread replies, the beginning of the output is '<nn> unread' followed by the sender and the message.
- If the message isn't a thread, then '<nn> replies' or '<nn> unread' isn't part of the output.
- Every message in a Chat or Space conversation in the main thread can be the beginning of a thread.
- Press the right arrow to open the thread panel and move focus to the last message.
- Note: This will be the anchor message if there are no other thread messages.
- Press Enter or the R shortcut to open the thread panel and move focus to the reply box for the thread.
