It is possible to set your status to appear invisible when using Google Chat in Gmail. While signed in as Invisible, you'll appear offline to your contacts. But you can still start a chat with any of your online contacts while you are in this status.
To go invisible, from the status drop-down menu in your chat list, select Invisible.
If you don't want a particular person to be able to see your online status, you can block that person. Once blocked, though, you won't be able to see their status, and you won't be able to communicate with them through chat.
Google Chat and other clients:
- If you set your status to invisible in Google Chat, then you'll appear offline to your contacts who are also using Google Chat or other chat apps.
- But if you are signed in to Chat as invisible in one location like Gmail, but signed in with an active status using another client, you will appear online to your contacts.
- "Invisible status" isn't available in Hangouts chat, which offers other options to share your status and availability (like showing when you were last seen on Hangouts or which device you're on). When you set your Google Chat status to invisible, Hangouts users will see you as unavailable. Learn more.
- To hide when you were last seen using Hangouts, uncheck Show when you were last seen online in your chat settings menu (click the dropdown menu next to your name in Gmail). The green status bar or dot will not appear next to your name, and your "last seen" state will not be shown. You can still send and receive messages. Learn more.
