Google Chat will be replaced by Hangouts on June 26, 2017. Learn how to use Hangouts.

Add or changing pictures

You have the option to add a custom picture to show to your contacts. Your picture is visible whenever someone hovers over your name in their Gmail chat lists. It is also visible in the chat window if your contact has enabled pictures in chat.

Adding or changing your picture in Gmail:

  1. Hover over your name in your chat list.
  2. Click on the default silhouette or your current picture.
  3. In resulting dialog box, select the source of your picture.
  4. Click Apply Changes.

In Gmail, it is also possible to assign a picture to a contact. Modifying contacts' pictures in this way is limited only to Gmail. You will continue to see their default picture when chatting with them outside of Gmail.
