Manage space settings

As a Space Manager, you can:

  • Control who can join a space.
  • Control who can manage members and groups.
  • Change whether the space is accessible to anyone in your organisation or only to people who you invite.
  • Decide whether everyone in the space can update space details, turn history on or off or use @all.

Important:

  • To manage space settings, you need a Google Workspace account.
  • When you create a space, you can invite people outside of your organisation into a space. However, they won't have access to some features, such as updating space details or adding people. Learn more about chatting with people outside your organisation.

Update space access settings

If you're a Space Manager, you can make a space accessible to anyone in your organisation or only to people who you invite.

  1. Go to Google Chat or your Gmail account.
  2. On the left, click Spaces.
  3. Select the space that you want to update.
  4. At the top, next to the space name, click the Down arrow Down arrow and then Space settings.
  5. Under the 'Access' section, next to the current access audience, click the Down arrow Down arrow.
  6. In the drop-down menu, select from the audience options:
    • To make a restricted space discoverable, select the audience for your entire domain.
    • To make a discoverable space restricted, select Restricted.
  7. Under 'Who can manage members and groups', select All members or Space Managers only.

Tips:

  • Discoverable spaces are searchable and browsable. You can share a link to a discoverable space.
  • Restricted spaces that you're invited to are searchable.
  • If you already allow people outside your organisation to join the space, you can't make the space discoverable to others.
