About U.S. sales tax

Google Accounts in the U.S. for paid services such as Google Workspace may be subject to state and local sales taxes. The tax law for your billing address determines whether your Google service account is subject to tax.

Resellers are often exempt from state and local sales tax when they provide their seller with a valid resale certificate. To properly invoice you, we must have your certificates on file and approved by our tax team.

Important: Google can’t advise you on tax matters. Contact your tax adviser for any questions about a tax exemption.

Questions?

Why am I being charged sales tax?
You’re being charged sales tax because your Google services are subject to tax by tax authorities at your billing address.
Are some organizations exempt from sales tax?
Yes. Subject to state and local tax regulations, certain organizations may be exempt from sales tax. Please contact your tax adviser for questions specific to your situation.
How do I submit my tax exemption certificate?
Follow these instructions to submit your tax exemption certificate to Google for review.
What information is required on my tax exemption certificate?
Each state’s tax exemption certificate has some slight formatting differences. For faster processing, please ensure the form is filled out completely. When completing your certificate, make sure:
  • The purchaser name on the certificate matches the customer account name.
  • Your state tax ID is included.
  • The reason for the tax exemption is checked: Resale, nonprofit organization, etc.
  • Google is listed as the seller.
  • The certificate is signed.
What should I do if my certificate is rejected?
If your certificate is rejected, review it for errors and resubmit. Also review these possible reasons for rejection. If you continue to have questions, please contact.
I submitted a tax exemption certificate. Why does my invoice still have tax charges?
Tax might be charged on your invoice if either:
  • The exemption certificate was still in review while the invoice was issued.
  • The exemption certificate covers a state that is different from the billing address.
