Overview of creating and testing your viewer

You have a lot of freedom in designing your Cardboard-inspired viewer; for instance, it doesn’t even need to be made of cardboard! As you plan your viewer, keep in mind the six basic components common to all Cardboard viewers. These include precision lenses to create the VR effect, the viewer's mechanical body, buttons for interacting with Cardboard-enabled apps, hook & loop to hold the enclosure around the smartphone, a rubber band to ensure that the phone fits snugly, and artwork illustrating proper assembly of the viewer.

To design your Cardboard-inspired viewer, follow the two-step design process:

  1. Adhere to design specifications - The open-source specifications ensure a high-quality viewer and user experience.
  2. Measure product tolerances - Examine your viewer prototype to ensure it meets all quality-control specifications.
