Why can't I edit my calendar events?

I have been using Outlook for ages and ages.  But they broke stuff (and haven't managed to fix it for over a year) so I was trying to get rid of the Outlook Android app and use Google Calendar instead.

I am still maintaining my contacts and calendar in a Microsoft account.  But if I create a new calendar event, Google Calendar creates it properly, but if I then realize I made a mistake on the time, for instance, I can't edit it.  I can open the event in Google Calendar and the "pen" is there, and it takes me into what looks like an edit mode, but there is no place to change the time.

Of course, Outlook Calendar can edit it just fine.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the new "groups" in Outlook.  I thought since Google Calendar has its own "group" type stuff, that it would probably know how to handle Outlook.

Should this be working?  I'm sure Microsoft will say it is working as it should with their Outlook app and they don't support 3rd party software.

Hi Mark,

I can edit events that were created in the Outlook calendar using the Google Calendar app, but not if they were originally created in the Outlook app. If that's not the behaviour you're seeing then I would try removing your Outlook account then adding it back again using Android System Settings > Accounts > Add Account instead of doing it within the Outlook app.

Yes, I've done lots of troubleshooting and it is google calendar that isn't working. I've been a professional programmer for decades, so I know how to troubleshoot.

It doesn't help that you keep misnaming the calendar that is a problem.  It isn't "family" and it isn't "my family", it is "your family".

I've already tried the things you suggested before my first post.

Here is a partial list of the calendars that Google calendar shows when I open the hamburger menu for the outlook account.  See "your family"?  Does that show up for your Microsoft account in Google calendar? If it doesn't, does it show up when you open outlook calendar on the web? If it doesn't show up for you, then it isn't surprising that you can't reproduce my problem.

"Your family" shows up in outlook for android calendar, Samsung calendar and Google calendar. As well as outlook desktop and from outlook on the web.

Yes, I do see it in the Outlook app but not in Google Calendar. My question is as follows: if you remove your Outlook account then add it back again does it still show up in Google Calendar?

Good News, Bad News, Good News.

First, the Good News.

I THINK I know what was going on.  I was trying a bunch of calendars and tried removing accounts and adding them back in and syncing and unsyncing, etc.  So in the end, I didn't know what I did in which calendar.

So yesterday I completely uninstalled the Google Calendar app.  Then I went into the Outlook for Android app.  I removed the account and added it back in.

Then I re-installed the Google Calendar.  I believe NOTHING showed up from outlook in the Google Calendar.  Perhaps it hadn't had time to do anything yet.  In any case, I went back into the Outlook app and toggled the Sync option ON.  Went I went back into the Google Calendar, the events were populating.  AND they were the SOLID color bubbles (while looking at the Schedule).  And they were Editable!!!!

Then I went to bed.

Bad News.

I woke up this morning and checked it and all the events were doubled.  Some in SOLID colored bubbles and some with just a color outline around the bubble.  If I tried to edit the outlined ones, they couldn't edit the times, for instance.

When I looked at the "hamburger menu" items, it showed TWO entries for my outlook account.  I commented some of the calendars in the first one out, and I could see that some of the "bad" events were removed.

So now I think I understand the root of the problem.

Good News.

Many, Many years ago when I first created a Microsoft account, probably to use with my HTC Windows phone, the account creation process was slightly confusing.  One of the first things it asked for was an email id.  I assumed it was going to send things to my already existing email account from another ISP.  So I filled it in with the existing email account (not an outlook.com address).

Later I realized that what they were really asking for was an outlook email account name that I wanted to USE with Microsoft.  So now I've already established my Microsoft ID as NOT an outlook.com ID.  And I couldn't find anywhere to change it.  And it is established as the same ID that is used by the computer and the phone and can't be changed.  So now when I tried to add the "microsoft" id and my ISP id for email into some email apps, they complained about one of them already being in use.  After all, they were spelled exactly the same way.  So to try to get around that, I created an Alias in Microsoft for the ID that was an actual outlook.com user.  Then I could fool some of the apps, by supplying my ISP id for one email account and my microsoft alias for another email account and it managed to fool the software.

Now here is where I think things got twisted in Google Calendar.  I think the Google Calendar started out using the Microsoft alias account.  And, I think the Alias is NOT part of the "Your Family" group.  And consequently, I think the Google Calendar wasn't allowed to edit the event. (Although it COULD add events, which is odd)

When I did the sync, it first added the real account and then later added the alias account.  That is why I found duplicates of everything in the morning.  And then when I commented out all the calendars under the alias account, I had ONLY single events AND they were editable.

So long story short, the microsoft alias and how it was treated by Google Calendar and Microsoft Exchange was the problem.  And I'm able to use the Google Calendar which is the cutest of the calendars I tried.  It is nice looking AND the looks are helpful for usage.

Oh, and Neil, I have NO idea why "Your Family" doesn't show up for you in your outlook account in the Google Calendar app.  Seems to work fine for me.  Maybe you've never added any members to your "Your Family" group?

Wow, that's some journey... and I'm delighted you've finally managed to sort it out! I'm the only member of my family group - and I use the Outlook app with a regular Hotmail address, so maybe one of those factors would explain it? Anyway, congratulations and thanks for sharing all that so others might benefit.

I just found this documentation that probably explains why YOU don't see "Your family":

When you add members to your family group, Outlook.com automatically creates a shared family calendar that everyone in your family can use. See your kids’ upcoming school and sports events, create recurring events like family dinners, and receive notifications about shared events on your phone.

So, if you haven't added anyone to your family group, you might not have a "Your family" group.  My wife and I were already using a shared family calendar before the mess that is "Your family" and "groups" was invented and our shared family calendar was "migrated" (and moved without asking) to the new group feature.  That is probably why we had it and you didn't.

Initially there was little to no support for the feature from Microsoft's own apps.  (not to mention third party apps like fridges that displayed shared calendars and suddenly failed because of the migration).  But even today, if I create an event in the "Your family" calendar using Microsoft's Outlook .com web app, I can't add, edit, or delete a "Your family" event.  Pretty stupid and extremely shortsighted, imho.  I think Microsoft thinks everyone has stopped using desktop apps and is using the web or phone.  (or at least that is what they want, but chances are, like me, people just start using other apps from other vendors if they at least work)

Hi Mark, thanks for that information - personally I don't use either Google or MS family calendars, but I am curious as to why I still don't see it in Google Calendar, but I do see it in the Outlook app. As it turns out I had actually added another MS family member some time ago while testing something else... And I've added events too, so it's a mystery - unless maybe Hotmail accounts are different.

Was there maybe an "other" or "more" that "your family" might have been hiding behind and wasn't showing in your snapshot?

Haha, no... that's usually my line :-)

That's a little odd. I don't have a "more" anywhere. But I do have a "show more" that hides some calendars that are not selected. I assume that "more" is not clickable and is just a grouping, right?

Yes, it's just the next section - I've been helping people find "missing" calendars for over 10 years... trust me, it's not there!

Ok, bummer.  That seems like yet another "Your family" problem.  They sure screwed things up with "Your family".

I wasn't not trusting you, just trying to make sure something wasn't overlooked.  Glad you have so much experience.  I'm experienced too :-)  With programming.  I wrote my first program in 1966 and have programmed in many languages on multiple platforms for multiple OSes.

I guess you are lucky that you don't use the Google or MS family calendars.
