Change or turn off Calendar notifications

To help make sure you don’t forget an event, you can get notifications on your phone, computer, or by email. You can change your notification settings for a single event, or all your events.

Change your notification settings

The changes you make on your computer also affect your mobile notifications. For example, if you choose a notification for 60 minutes before on your computer, you'll also get a notification on your phone 60 minutes before your event.

Turn notifications on or off

You can choose whether to have notifications for events, and whether you want to get notifications over email or in your browser.

  1. Open Google Calendar on your computer.
  2. In the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  3. At the top of the page, click the Calendars tab.
  4. Next to your calendar's name, click Edit notifications.
  5. Click Add a notification or edit an existing notification.
  6. At the bottom of the page, click Save.

Note: To get notifications on your computer, you need to have Google Calendar open in your browser.

Change your notification settings

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. In the top right, click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  3. In "Notifications", choose your settings.
  4. Click Save.
  5. If you choose the "desktop notifications" setting, your browser may ask you to allow to show notifications. The exact prompt you see may look different depending on which browser you use. 

Note: If you stopped receiving event notifications, it may be because your browser doesn't support alerts. To receive event notifications from Calendar, choose the "desktop notifications" setting. 

"Browser doesn't support notifications" error

If you see the message "Browser doesn't support notifications," your browser needs to be updated before you can get Google Calendar notifications.

Change notifications for an individual event
  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. Open the event's details.
  3. In "Notifications", choose how you'd like to be notified.
  4. Click Save.

Note: Your changes to notifications only apply to you. Other people invited to the event will get notifications based on their own settings.

Not getting notifications

First, make sure notifications are turned on for your calendar using the directions above.

Next, check your browser's permission settings. If you choose the  "desktop notifications" setting but you don't allow your browser to show Google Calendar notifications, you won't see any notifications.

If desktop notifications aren't working, you might have turned them off. To turn on desktop notifications:

In Chrome

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More and then Settings.
  3. Click Advanced Down Arrow .
  4. Under "Privacy and security," click Content Settings.
  5. Click Notifications.
  6. Next to "Allow," click Add.
  7. Enter and then click Add.

In other browsers

If you use Safari, Firefox, or another browser, open your browser’s notification preferences and add permissions for Check your browser’s support site for specific instructions.

Note about flight events: By default, you won't get notifications for events that were added from Gmail.
