Congratulations!

You've completed the steps necessary to sell a book on Google Play. Your settings should take effect within a day.

Additional things to do once your book is available for sale

If your book still isn't available for sale after going through this checklist, please try our troubleshooting tool.

Step 1. Create an account

Quick steps

  1. If you don't already have one, create a new account at play.google.com/books/publish/.
  2. Agree to the Google Books Terms and Conditions and the Google Editions Addendum.

To sell books on Google Play, you'll need to join the Google Books Partner Program. This will give you access to the Google Play Books Partner Center, where you can manage your book catalog and payment settings.

Not all countries are eligible to sell books on Google Play. The Google Editions Addendum won't be available unless you're in one of these countries, but we're working hard to expand internationally, so please check back later if you can't participate at this time.

Detailed steps

  1. Go to play.google.com/books/publish and either sign in using an existing Google Account, or create a new account.
  2. Provide account details and contact information, then click Continue.
  3. Review the Google Books Terms and Conditions and the Google Editions Addendum. (These may be presented to you in a single combined document, the Google Books and Google Play Agreement.) If you accept these terms, indicate this with the appropriate selections.
  4. Click Continue.

Go to the Partner Center

If you already have an account but you've forgotten the password, please visit the Google Account Recovery page.

Step 2. Set up your payment profile

Quick steps

  1. Add a new payment profile.

You must have a payment profile in order to sell books on Google Play. The country listed in this payment profile will determine the currency you're paid in.

Detailed steps

  1. You'll be asked to set up a payment profile in a pop-up box after signing up for a new account and agreeing to the Terms. (If you skipped this step, go to the Payment Center, and under Payment profiles, click Add a Payment Profile.)
  2. Enter your business name, contact name, address, and phone number.
  3. If you agree to the terms, continue by checking the box labeled I agree to Terms of Service.
  4. Click the Submit button.
If you see an error message about expired credentials, please sign out of your Google Account and sign in again.

Go to the Payment Center

You can have multiple payment profiles (for example, if you want to receive payments in multiple bank accounts), but you only need one to start selling books on Google Play.

Step 3. Tell us about your book

Quick steps

  1. Add the book to your Book Catalog.
  2. Enter bibliographic information for the book.

In this step, you only need to provide general details for the book, such as the title and author. We'll ask for additional settings in the next steps.

Detailed steps

  1. In your Partner Center account, go to the Book Catalog.
  2. Click the Add Book button.
  3. Enter the book's ISBN (either the 10-digit or 13-digit ISBN is fine). If you don't have an ISBN for this book, check the box labeled This book doesn't have an ISBN or other identifier, and a Google-specific identifier (prefixed with GGKEY) will be assigned to your book.
  4. If you have multiple templates in your account, select the template with the default settings you'd like to apply to this book.
  5. Provide as much information as possible about the book on the General details page.

Go to your Book Catalog

If you have multiple ISBNs for a book, provide the one you wish to see in reports. Often this is the ISBN for the ePub format eBook edition of the book.

Step 4. Upload content

Quick steps

  1. On the Content tab, upload the book content and cover files.

Google accepts eBook files in PDF or ePub format. If possible, we recommend that you submit both in order to provide buyers with more reading choices.

Detailed steps

  1. On the Content tab, click the Upload content button.
  2. Click Choose files and select the files for this book from your computer. You can upload multiple files at one time. Please be sure to follow our filename guidelines.
  3. Successfully uploaded and processed files will be listed on this tab, although there may be a processing delay before they appear.

Go to your Book Catalog

You can also upload any future updates to your book files on this page. Any older versions of the files will be overwritten in our system, although they'll still be listed.

Step 5. Provide prices

Quick steps

  1. On the book's Prices tab, add a new price.
  2. Enter the currency, value, and the applicable countries for the price.

We require a price in order to list your book on Google Play, even if you wish to make it available for free (in which case, please enter 0 as the amount). Google will calculate your revenue share based on the list price you provide. There are three required components for a price:

  • the currency,
  • the numeric amount,
  • and the countries where the price applies.

Google needs a price in the local currency for each country where you want to sell the book -- for example, to sell in the U.S., you must either:

  • directly provide a price in U.S. dollars, or
  • have currency conversion enabled (accounts created after July 2014 have this option on by default), and include the U.S. in the list of countries where a price in another currency should be applied.

You can provide multiple prices with different settings (such as different currencies) if necessary.

Detailed steps

  1. Go to the Prices tab for the book.
  2. Click the Add a new price button.
  3. Click Currency to enter the currency, formatted as a three-letter ISO 4217 code (e.g., USD for U.S. dollars).
  4. Click Amount to enter the numeric price.
  5. If you don't want this price to apply to all possible countries, click WORLD and enter the list of countries where you'd like this price to apply, formatted according to our guidelines.
    • If currency conversion is enabled (for accounts created after July 2014, this option is on by default), you can list countries that use a different currency than the one you specified or use the keyword WORLD to indicate all your sales territories. Your converted prices will be based on your list price.
    • If you're not using the currency conversion tool, you should provide separate list prices in the local currency for each country where you wish to sell the book.

Go to your Book Catalog

Advanced price settings, such as whether the price applies to countries where you're subject to fixed book price laws, can be configured by clicking More details.

Step 6. Configure additional settings

Quick steps

  1. On the Settings tab, provide additional metadata and configure distribution and Google Search preview settings.

Additional settings allow you to customize how your book is displayed and distributed.

Detailed steps

  1. Configure your metadata settings.

Metadata settings are optional, but providing as much information as possible will help readers discover your books.

    1. For the Book Format field, select eBook if this is the eBook edition of the book.
    2. If there are other books that are associated with this book (such as a print edition with a different ISBN), you can add them as Related ISBNs.
    3. Add a Subject by selecting a subject schema and typing in a keyword. Matching subjects will appear in a drop-down. You can add multiple subject.
    4. In the Language field, enter the primary language of the book as a three-letter ISO 639-2 code (e.g., eng for English).
    5. Provide the date the book was released in the Publication date field. This doesn't affect when the book becomes available for sale.
    6. Enter the number of pages in the Page Count field.
    7. If the book is part of a series, enter the name in the Series field and the volume number in the Volume in Series field.
    8. In the Publisher Name field, enter the name of the publisher.
  2. Configure your Google Play distribution settings.
    1. If the book shouldn't be available for sale until a specific date in the future, enter the date in the On Sale Date field. Use the format YYYY-MM-DD.
    2. If you want to apply Digital Rights Management (DRM) to your book, check the box labeled DRM Enabled.
    3. If you have the rights to include images in the eBook, check the box labeled Show Photos in eBook. If a book contains a significant number of images, we can sell it only if this box is checked or if we receive an ePub file.
    4. If you wish to sell the book in PDF format, check the box labeled Include Scanned Pages.
    5. Select the maximum allowable percentage of the book that buyers can copy and paste in the Copy / Paste Percentage field.
  3. Configure your Google Search preview settings.
    1. You can change the percentage of the book that can be previewed on Google Books with the Preview Type drop-down.
    2. Make sure your preview territories are formatted correctly and include any sales territories (see Step 4).
    3. If you sell your book directly on your own website, you may want to include a Buy link; the Buy Link Text should be the name of your website and the Buy Link is the URL for purchasing this specific book.
    4. Enter your website homepage URL as the Publisher Website.
    5. If you have a logo, you can upload it as the Publisher Logo.
    6. If you have the rights to show images in the book preview, check the box labeled Show Photos in Preview.
    7. If you set the preview percentage to 100% and you wish to make the book downloadable on Google Books, check the box labeled PDF Download Allowed.
    8. If you set a future On Sale Date in the previous step (in the distribution settings), and you don't want this book to be previewable before that date, check the box labeled No Preview Before On Sale Date.

Step 7. Publish the book

Quick steps

  1. Go to the Publish tab.
  2. Publish the book on Google Play.

Once your files are uploaded and you're satisfied with your book's settings, you're ready to make your book available for sale.

Detailed steps

  1. Go to the Publish tab. (If you've previously changed this book's status, the tab may be called Summary instead.)
  2. If this is a new book, click the Ready to publish button in the upper right corner.
  3. Select Publish to Google Play and Google Books. (For some books, the button may have a different label, such as Enable for Google Books or Activate and enable for Google Play. 4. Congratulations! Your book should be available for sale within a day, at which point you can see it on Google Play by going to the Content tab and clicking the Google Play link.

Quick steps

  1. In the Payment Center, edit your payment profile.
  2. Add a bank account.
  3. If you plan to sell books in the U.S., submit tax information.
  4. If your bank account is in Europe, verify your business information.

In order for Google to pay you for your book sales, you'll need to provide details about your bank account. (You can start selling books without providing details about your bank account -- Google will hold accrued funds from any sales.)

Detailed steps

  1. Go to the Payment Center.
  2. Click the edit link next to the payment profile.
  3. Click the Add a new payment method button.
  4. Enter your bank account information.
  5. The box labeled Set this payment method as Primary is checked by default. Do not uncheck this box unless you're providing bank account settings that you don't wish to activate yet.
  6. Click the Save button.

You should also provide your tax information if you're planning to sell your books in the U.S. Otherwise, your revenue earnings may be held.

  1. Still on the "Edit Payment Profile" screen, click Payee Profile (under the profile name).
  2. In the "Tax detail" section, click Submit tax information.
  3. You'll be asked a series of questions in order to direct you to the appropriate tax form, which you should fill out.
  4. Click the Submit button.
