Why some books can't be downloaded

There are a few reasons why some books aren't available for you to download.

Copyright law: If a book is copyrighted, there are restrictions on how much you can see. But if a book is out of copyright and in the public domain in your country, it can be made downloadable.

  • Tip: If you’re looking to download a classic novel, try searching for the original edition. Once a classic novel has been re-published, the newer edition is usually copyrighted and not downloadable.

Need to be reviewed: Copyright law is complex, so it can be difficult to determine whether a book is in the public domain or not. We review books on an ongoing basis to see if we can make them available for download. If you think a book is in the public domain in your country but is not available in full, ask us to review it.

Not yet scanned: Some public domain books haven't been scanned, so we don’t have anything for you to download at the moment. We’re working to make them downloadable for you.
