Blogger back up, import, and export features not working for large blogs - Please help!!! 1 Recommended Answer 34 Replies 21 Upvotes

My partner and I both have large blogs (blogging for 15+ years) with 1000s of posts and 1000s of comments. The Blogger export/import function is no longer working. We have already lost a huge chunk of blog comments AND have no way to backup our blogs.

We have searched for an alternative way to export the blogs to an XML file -- i.e. doing this through a non-Blogger app or utility -- but have not found anything.

We have created dummy blogs to test on. The export function works for about 100 posts, then stops working.

Blogger: PLEASE fix the export/import function! Thank you in advance.

Hi Laura: does the backup through Google Takeout work?

To use that:
1. Sign in to Google with the same account you use for Blogger
3. Select Blogger as a product (You may need to use the "Deselect all" option at the top of the page to deselect all the other Google products first)
4. Click the "Multiple Formats" button under Blogger to see the details of what the archive will include
5. Click "Next Step"
6. Select a Delivery method (downloadable archive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box)
7. Change the File Type & maximum size for your archives (the default usually works fine)
8. Click Create Archive

Google will email you when your Archive is ready.

You might also want to make an archive of your "Google Photos", or at least your Blogger blog's album(s) in Google Photos. That will let you download an archive of your blog's images.

Thank you very much for your reply. Searching for an answer to this issue, we did fine Google Takeout. It solves part of the problem.

Unfortunately it is only half a solution.

I lost part of my blog because Blogger's backup function didn't work properly. Now I need to *import* an XML file -- a backup -- into Blogger. The import function is not working.

You either get a bx error message, or you get as far as selecting the XML file from your computer -- then endless waiting. It never uploads/imports.

Thanks for those additional details.

Can you try creating a new test blog (you can set it so it's private and not indexed in search) to see if it's working to import it there?

Thanks so much for your reply.

I have tried importing the XML file into the test blog dozens of times. I either get the "Whoops! bx" error message, or if I get past that, endless spinning, and the file never uploads. I've waited hours, sometimes more than 24 hours -- when I come back, it's always spinning. No upload/import.

I try every morning. Always the same result.

I want to clarify that I am trying to import an XML backup file from May 2019. The backup I did in February 2020 resulted in a corrupt or incomplete file -- and that's how I lost a big chunk of comments.

Hi Laura, I've checked in with Blogger, and I'll let you know if there is an update.
