Blogger backup does not work - is doing a shallow copy rather than a deep copy - how to open defect? 1 Recommended Answer 9 Replies 2 Upvotes

I followed the Blogger instructions on  backing up my blog and downloaded the file to my computer.
However it does not seem to actually work.
  1. The backup file is just an xml. What about the pictures in my blog?
  2. When I open the xml file in Notepad++, I do not see all of my blog text from the posts at all. I also see a lot of hrefs in the xml file.

Is it possible to open a defect or issue so Google can fix it?

Thanks for your reply. But I do not see any of the text from my posts in the XML file. Isn't that reason enough to suspect there is something wrong? also, several of the images were stored on the blog itself. I would have expected them to be downloaded.
A backup should store everything not just some links.
Perhaps you can try the same on your blog and see if you have the same results?

There is no "defect" it is working as designed.

When you back up your blog you just get the XML file of the contents all the posts. XML is "machine readable" & can be put back onto Blogger if needed.

You need to back up your template & pictures separately.

To satisfy yourself I suggest testing it as I describe above.
