Help people find your blog

To help readers find your blog, allow search engines to list your blog.

  1. Sign in to Blogger.
  2. Select the blog to update.
  3. In the left menu, click Settings > Basic.
  4. In Privacy, click Edit.
  5. Select Yes for one or both options.
  6. Click Save changes.

Manage SEO in Blogger

You can manage the search engine preferences for your blog. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) helps increase traffic to your blog by making it show up higher in search results.

To manage SEO options:

  1. Sign in to Blogger.
  2. Select the blog to manage SEO.
  3. In the left menu, select Settings > Search Preferences.

Note: If you use incorrect settings, your blog may not be found by search engines.

Write a description for your blog

The description appears under your link in the results of a search engine.

  1. In the left menu, select Settings > Search Preferences.
  2. Next to “Description,” click Edit.
  3. Select Yes and write your search description.
  4. Click Save changes.
To add a search description for every post, click “Post Settings” on the right of the Post Editor.
Hide pages and links from search

You can list pages or posts that you don’t want search engines to find.

  1. In the left menu, select Settings > Search Preferences.
  2. Under “Crawlers and Indexing,” next to “Custom robots.txt,” click Edit.
  3. Select Yes and add the content for search engines to ignore.
  4. Click Save changes.

You can also indicate if search engines should not follow certain links.

  1. From your Blogger dashboard, select Posts.
  2. Select a post and click Edit.
  3. Click Link.
  4. Select rel=’nofollow’.

Redirect a URL

You can redirect URLs from your blog to new posts or pages.

  1. In the left menu, select Settings > Search preferences.
  2. Under "Errors and redirections,” next to “Custom redirects,” click Edit.
  3. Add the deleted URL and the URL you want to point it to. If the original article was deleted, check "Permanent."
  4. Click Save > Save changes.
Change "Page not found"

You can add a personalized 404 page for your blog.

  1. In the left menu, select Settings > Search preferences.
  2. Under “Errors and redirections," next to “Custom page not found," click Edit.
  3. Enter your custom message. You can also use simple HTML.
  4. Click Save changes.
Make your images searchable

To make your images searchable, and accessible for visually impaired readers, you can add “alt” (short description of the image) and “title” (long description of the image) attributes to your images.

  1. Add an image to your post and click it.  
  2. Select Properties.
  3. In the text box, add a short description in “alt” and a long description under “title.”
  4. Click OK.
Add headers

Tell search engines what your post is about with headers.

To add header tags:

  1. Highlight the text to make into a header.
  2. In Post Editor, click the drop-down arrow in Format.
  3. Select the type of heading.
Hide headers from search engines

You can tell search engine crawlers if there are sections of your blog that you don’t want them to display.

  1. In the left menu, select Settings > Search preferences.
  2. Under “Crawlers and indexing,” next to “Custom robots header tags,” click Edit.
  3. Select Yes.
  4. Check the boxes to set your preferences.
  5. Click Save changes.

Change how your links appear

You can change the URL that links to your blog posts to a URL that’s easier for search engines to find.

  1. Select the blog to update.
  2. In the left menu, click Posts.
  3. Select a post to update.
  4. In the Post Editor, on the right, click Post Settings > Permalink.
  5. Select Custom permalink and add your preferred URL.
