Google home devices wont let my Kids play music anymore.
1
I have several google assistant devices in my home, a few Mini's, a "google home" and a screen.  I also have google family link setup, so that my wife and I have some controls over our kids devices and accounts.

I setup voice match on my google devices, so the kids can listen to music on any of the devices around the house, i have things like music restrictions turned on, on their accounts, to filter explicit music.

We were a google play music family until Google decided to decomission it, and recently made the switch to youtube music.  The default music source on my assistants was switched to youtube music a few months ago.

Everything was great, until just a few days ago, my kids started saying they cant play music anymore.  When they ask to play a song, any song, the assistant tells them something along the lines of "Im sorry, your account isnt allowed to play youtube videos".  Whether they asked one of the speaker devices, or the screen, the result is always the same.  Ive tried searching for an answer here, and cant find anything specific to my problem.

They do have Youtube kids setup, and I believe at some point i locked them out of youtube proper, but I can't seem to find that setting anymore in family link.  I also don't want to turn that off, youtube music is different than youtube videos.  Music, with explicit content disabled, is very much OK for my kids.  The swath of garbage that can be unfiltered youtube... not so much.

Any suggestions?

I have this exact same issue right now. Kids can't play any music with the this account play videos on YouTube error. The speakers will play music when I ask, but not if they do. I have tried disabling filters, voice match, etc. And cannot get it to work. I am also a former play music subscriber, but have switched to YouTube music.

Help Google!!!

Just to add some further info, we have 2 Google home (nest) speakers and 2 Insignia NS-CSPGASP speakers. Kids are unable to play music from YouTube music on any of the 4 devices. We also have a Nest Hub display and I found that the kids can ask it to play music from YouTube music on that without issue.  Clearly this seems to be some kind of Google back end issue. As far as I can tell it all started the other day with the play music shut down.

Only pseudo work around I've found is if I go into the digital wellbeing settings and remove YouTube music and play music from the list of services, the kids are able to get music playing from spotify on the speakers. This isn't really helpful though since we subscribe to YouTube music, not spotify, so they are unable to directly request songs to play.

Thanks for the added info Corey.  In my case the kids cant play youtube music even on our display.  They can use pandora or other services, but not the service we PAY FOR.  I havent been able to find anything I can do from my end to make this work.  I also believe this is a google back-end problem.

I mean.. We could just drop the google subscription and go to spotify like the rest of the world.  :P

James-
For the record, I have tried changing the well being settings as well as disabling the filters altogether. The speakers still play music from YouTube music when I ask, but not when the kids ask. I also tried disabling personal results on the speakers with no change. Kids always receive the this account can't play videos from YouTube error. I even asked them to ask to play a song from YouTube music and it still gives the can't play videos from YouTube error.

According to this article, kids can no longer listen to music, since Google Play music has been removed. This is a problem

This is one of the use cases I had to buy into the Google Nest EcoSystem. This is just horrible timing. A few months ago I purchased a full setup. 7 Nest Minis, 1 Home Max, 1 Hub Max, 1 Chromecast Ultra, Nest Wifi with 2 pucks, and a full Nest Secure config with sensors and cameras. In the past week the speakers no longer can play music for my 3 kids, and they discontinued Nest Secure too. I guess I should have gone with Amazon/Ring instead.

I did find a workaround. In Family Link, remove Personalized Results for your kids on those speakers. It will treat them as guests, and they will be able to play music (but not their playlists.) Also, remember to go to each speaker's YouTube settings if you want to block inappropriate music.

It's stupid that we have to do this, but it does work.

This issue, combined with the sudden discontinuation of the Nest Thermostat E (which i was all set to buy 3 more of to complete my home heating setup) and replacement with a simialr, but controlled through a different app thermostat, has be seriously considering dropping google's nice but UNRELIABLE services in favor of just about anything that isnt run by Amazon. I'd really like my features back Google.

I am having the same problem. They have been broadcasting me to tell me their music requests all morning so that I can tell the speakers what to play. I really hope they fix this! I still don't want my kids watching YouTube, I just want family link to be able to differentiate between videos and songs through the speakers!

I have the same issue, i have to tell the kid's speaker in their room what to play when they want music.  Which isnt horrible, at least it means i get to know what theyre listening to. The problem is.. It then plays it as me. so their horrible pop music preferences are poisoning my music history.  So when I want to listen to music, i get billie eilish mixed in there.  Sigh.

Food for thought.. I haven't fully tested the google home integration, but Spotify offers a family plan, for basically the same price as google's music subscription.  If google doesn't give us a solution, i think we all know what to do.

Still nothing here?  Is there a way to report this as a problem to google?  This all worked flawlessly until they took away google play music.  How can we report that as a problem?  Or do I have to buy my kids an FM Radio?

I had this issue and was able to use Family Link, go to my child profile, go to the device I want them to play music on (all of my Google devices in my case) and to settings then "Unlink voice match". Gives up the ability for the speaker to recognize them but don't really need them to be recognized by voice. Now they can play music again. A work around fudge but the best I came up with. No excuse that Google doesn't have a music solution for our kids from our FAMILY music subscription. Bunk.

We have this issue too - it's utterly ridiculous. It means we can't use our *family* music subscription. If I remove my daughter's voice recognition from a device, I can't listen at the same time on another device because it thinks it's "me" playing on the other.

I've also wasted so much time on troubleshooting this. Wish I'd gone with Spotify - I thought, foolishly, that going for the Google services would make for a smoother experience on Google devices. But, it's a joke.

Edit: Digital Wellbeing is not set up on the shared device my daughter is currently using. On her own speaker, filters are disabled (to try and get this stupid thing to work).

Deprecating Google music, forcing us to use YouTube music, asking us to enable family link and then not realizing that means kids can't use Google Home for music is a great example of how Google is too big. The different parts don't talk to each other and we end up in this absurd situation. Please fix this bug!!!

I'm having the same problem and quite frankly it's beyond irritating. Google spent the majority of this year preparing their users for a move to YouTube Music, but didn't setup the necessary measures to avoid issues like this. Kids have never been able to use Youtube Music in the same way adult accounts can, so I'm confused how this was overlooked when the transition was made.

The only work around I know of is just making new unrestricted accounts for the kids...

FIXED! Just got off Google support regarding this issue. After Google music shutdown, my home mini stopped letting my kids get music but the nest minis did. My kids accounts are controlled through family link and the home mini is 1st gen. We did a factory reset on the home mini (the problem unit) and set it back up and now it works. Perhaps there is some stuck software that won't update without a reset? I did have to reset two times to get it to fully clear and reset.

I took my kiddo's voice recognition off of their accounts and now they can play music, but that is a pain in the butt. Now with taking voice recognition off it doesn't do other things.  Google should have thought about this before switching so it could have been more seamless.  I may try to factory reset them when I have time.

Same issue here. Factory reset fixed. Disappointed this wasn't addressed through an update or otherwise. Rebranding things and causing user issues is frustrating for users.

So the only way to fix is this it's with a factory reset? That's what it sounds like can people verify this? I have scrubs 10 devices that would need this ranging from mini to screens.

Google is there no other way? This is very frustrating....

Oh God. The fail. I actually canceled Spotify since youtube music worked better technically on my devices. But not allowing the kids to play music on these devices is a deal breaker.

Wait.. so a factory reset does what now?   How does this suddenly make YT music work?  By nuking the kid's voice match?

That's a non-starter for me.  The whole reason I have their voice match setup, is so their horrible pop music doesn't end up in my (the default account) music preferences.

Or are you saying a reset somehow legitimately fixes the problem?  As far as ive been able to tell, YT music is flat out disabled for my kids accounts.

Throwing my hat into the ring. My kids are all out of luck because we pay for YouTube. Beyond disappointed. Especially because my kids love music, imagine that! It doesn't seem like Google is even acknowledging the problem. They killed off a perfectly fine serviced for this!? 4 nests and one hub, not to mention other Google home devices.

Ok this just got real.  I followed the workaround to remove my kid's account from the Google Home devices, and now they can play music.  But guess what?  Everything they request is now part of MY history and contributes to MY profile!  Now my supermix starts with whatever the hell my kids are requesting.  This was not an issue with Play Music.  Please please please make this a priority.

I will henceforth be cancelling my paid youtube premium membership and will sign up with Spotify instead. We like google, but this is insane and since google is not addressing this issue, I have no choice.
I'm siiiiiiiick of my children (period). I'm especially sick of my daughters (4 and 7) asking google to play songs and hearing "sorry, but this account can't play videos on youtube"

Spotify! Here we come!

Google, stop sucking and I'll come back. Please get rid of Youtube Music and go back to Google music.

This is so ridiculous, first the discontinuation of a better service for music in general (google play music) for a subpar product (youtube music) and then not being able to have the fine grained controls for my kids that I would like to have as a parent. This will just drive people away from @google services to other solutions such as spotify or even different hw solutions. Would be good to have an idea of whats on the roadmap and whether this will be fixed.

Can anyone confirm if all the existing, working functionality (e.g. voice recognition for each family member) is restored automatically after factory resetting the Google Nest Mini?   Or can anyone confirm functionality that is definitely lost permanently after factory resetting the Nest Mini?

It should not be this difficult to for a kid on a YouTube Premium family subscription to command a Nest Mini to play KidzBop, the child's music playlists, and other non-explicit music, per the FamilyLink settings.
