Can I stop Google Assistant activating on my phone when it's locked? 0 Recommended Answers 49 Replies 153 Upvotes

I just got a new Galaxy Note 9 and one thing keeps bothering me. I have a Google Home Mini in my office and ask it things like "what's the temperature" every now and then. I always have my phone on my desk in front of me and when I say "Hey Google" or "OK Google" the screen always turns on the lock screen. Is there a way to disabled Google Assistant while my phone's screen is locked and off so that only the Google Home Mini responds? It's getting frustrating having to keep turning the screen off every time I ask my Home a question.

Hello Renkyz,
Only the closest Google Home device that has mic listening enabled should respond to you. It may be worth reviewing the Google Home & phone respond to "OK Google" help article.
I'm not familiar with the Galaxy Note 9 but you may also be able to disable voice match unlock on it. This article explains how you can change "Ok Google" settings
Let me know if you have questions.

Hi Sandy, thanks for your reply.
What you described is true for me. Only the Google Home responds and my phone stats quiet on the lockscreen. But I have my screen set to stay on for 5 minutes without activity before turning off again (I just like it that way for stuff I do). So I constantly have to turn the screen off. Would just be nice if there was an option to disable Google Assistant while the phone is locked and the screen is off.

We know the Google Teams review feedback on the forums, so if enough people ask for this it might happen in the future.
You could take a look at IFTTT, Stringify and Trigger. They're all popular options for people that wish to plug functionality gaps.

Yeah I like IFTTT, used it a bit already. Thanks for your help :) hopefully I find a solution soon.

Happens to me too and the phone emits a loud ding sound. Is it possible to disable the sound ? The phone can't respond anyway

Any update here, google please add the option to disable the assistant while the phone is locked.  Its quite annoying

Google updated to allow Hey Google on the lock screen, but for some rediculous reason didn't think of a use case where you would want that disabled.

I use the assistant on my phone regularly, but also in my home which uses different Google accounts. Both respond. We need a way to disable the assistant when the screen is off, but still use it when the screen is on.

Why can't Google simply give you the option to programme the trigger words for different devices? That way you can say something like "OK Jeeves" to activate the Google home devices and then "OK google" to activate my smart phone. That would solve all the problems, surely?
