Why is assistant saying "sorry I don't understand"
1
Hi, I rely heavily on wired headset to access my phone while it's in my pocket (motorcyclist), mostly for navigation and checking messages and making calls. Asking for 'navigation' elicits the response "sorry I don't understand". If I unlock the screen the phone does understand the command and will navigate! I can make calls, ask the time etc with the screen locked or off.
This happens on my moto g 5g plus and my moto g4. I have partially solved this on the G4 by uninstalling google app updates. this allows navigation from lock/off screen, but it will not read msgs. If I update I can read msgs but lose navigation.
Unfortunately I can't roll back google on the newer phone far enough to get rid of the "dont understand response" Does anyone else have this problem or have a solution. Cheers, Guy.

Hi C biskit,

Can you turn on the listen to bluetooth under assistant settings voice.

Try to install theAndroid Auto app which will keep the phone unlocked and you can use maps and assistant as well in a better way.

Let me know if this helps

No, this didn't work. Assistant doesn't understand "navigate" through the headset with the screen off. Understands just about everything else I've tried, even if I ask " how far is it to...?".

My issue started this morning. It is annoying and from what I am seeing the development team is slow in resolving the issue. It seems like is growing out of hand. The thread with routines has atleast 200 replies. I guess this thread also has to have that many replies for Google to fix the firmware. It is annoying that the device says "I didnt understand" but does the command anyway. I bought into the google assistant for convenience, not frustration. Also, the whole reset your modem and device.... it does not work, it is a SOFTWARE issue, period.

For those who have a JBL 10 and need to reset the device, or I think it unlinks it from google manually, is to hold the bluetooth and volume up button. This wont resolve the issue, but just an FYI.

Same here on LG WK7 and JBL Link 10.  My guess is that once the music/radio you asked for starts playing, Google is still listening and then tries to interpret the first few seconds of the music/radio and then says "I don't understand".

Same here on Insignia Smart Speakers w/Google Assistant.  I ask to play a radio station, it does, then says it doesn't understand, then continues the music.  Even happens if I pause the device from my phone, then restart it.  I think prior posters are correct - it continues to listen for additional commands, but is interpreting its output (the music) as a command.

I have a similar issue.   Android Auto will send a text when I ask it to.  But after I listen to an incoming text and google asks me if I want to respond it no longer understands.   I've tried saying no,  no thank you and yes all with and without please attached.   Nothing works.  It's annoying because it leaves the messages as unread on my phone and also because it will not allow me to respond back.   So since none of the texts get marked as read I have to listen to all previous texts sequentially when I get a new text.   So annoying.  Please anyone that has a fix tell us.   I hate apple but may have to switch since this is not happening to my friend who has apple carplay.

This is a ridiculous situation.
The main feature that I use when I'm on my motorbike no longer works at all.
When I give voice instruction to navigate, I either get "sorry, I don't understand"
Or I get tourist info and facts about the destination that I've requested.

It was bad enough to have no ability to stop navigation once she's got going. Now I cannot even start it unless I stop and use the screen.
This is complete crap.

I have tried with and without Google Auto.
I have checked my maps settings and all is as expected for voice navigation.
No joy.

Please fix it

Dec 11, 2020 around noon, my Google Maps (LG7 ThinQ) started answering all of my verbal requests to navigate with "Sorry, I don't understand." Maps worked just fine at 10am, 11 & 11:30am on the same day. I can type in the address and Maps works just fine, but I can no longer speak "Hey Google, navigate to..." because Google replies with "Sorry, I don't understand.

Can somebody at Google please examine the update that was released on the morning of Dec 11, 2020?

I am having the same problem. We have 4 phones in my household:

-Google Pixel 3 XL
-Google Pixel 3a
-Google Pixel 4a 5G
-OnePlus 8 5G

The "navigate" command no longer works on the two Pixels most recently updated (3a and 4a 5G). Haven't installed the latest updates for the 3 XL or the OnePlus 8. Both the Pixel 3 XL and OnePlus 8 work fine when saying "Ok Google, Navigate to _______". However, the Pixel 3a and 4a 5G just say, "Sorry, I don't understand" to the navigate command. They can do everything else I've tried, including giving the weather, converting measurements, telling me how far a place is, and asking it to save a reminder. If I ask it "How do I get to ______", it pulls up driving directions and I can press "start" to navigate, but saying "Navigate to ______" no longer brings me directly to Maps and navigation. It responds with "Sorry, I don't understand" to a command to navigate.

If I open the Maps app, I can press the mic icon and say "Navigate to ______" and that works as expected.

I have tried un-installing and re-installing/updating the Google and Google Assistant apps multiple times (and restarting accordingly). Again, other functions work, but it is annoying to lose our most frequently-used function: telling it to navigate to a place.

Any help from Google on this? To be clear, I'm not using any sort of headset or anything, just straight up using the assistant on the phone. I've tried without a phone case to be sure the mic isn't obstructed (and it's obvious that it isn't since I can give other commands / ask other questions without issue.

Please advise. We recently upgraded to the 4a 5G and have another phone set to upgrade to that, but we would choose a different phone (i.e. one without the latest update) if this issue would persist.

I tried changing my default phone app and contacts app to the Google ones and still doesn't understand.

But I can get directions, play music etc.

For me, seems to be anything that wants to use the contacts or possibly phone apps.

Not sure if Samsung has updated something that is interfering with it.

I have also tried using the Samsung installed phone and contacts app but still doesn't work.

Last time this happened with another phone, the only solution was to get a new phone to get it to work.

Do you reckon Google even look at these threads??

THINK I FOUND A WORKAROUND.
I was wondering if it was software or keywords that it was having issues with so instead of "take me to" or "navigate to" use "GO TO." Has been working for me with that keyword instead. Hope this resolves the issues for people

This has started happening to me as well on my LG v40. I used to be able to say "Hey Google" then "CALL XYZ" where XYZ was a phonebook entry. Now the Assistant either says "Sorry, I don't understand." or it does a web search. WHAT??? This is major functionality that has suddenly broken. It renders handsfree dialing unavailable. Like the OP, I'm also having a problem with "NAVIGATE TO" not bringing up maps and starting the navigation.
